Winston County Deputy Coroner Tracey Yealock has confirmed that a recent death of a 66-year-old female in Winston County is officially the result of Influenza.

It is important for everyone to be cautious and follow health department guidelines to protect themselves from infection. Washing hands frequently, avoid touching the face and mouth area and getting a flu shot will help avoid this outbreak.

Health officials stress that the virus can remain active on objects for up to 48 hours. Everyone should use extreme caution and disinfect areas routinely.

Coroner officials will continue to monitor county deaths for the protection of families of flu victims and ensure accurate official records. If you are experiencing flu symptoms you need to take it seriously and seek treatment immediately.

A single-vehicle crash at 6:44 a.m. today, Jan 27, has claimed the life of a Nauvoo teen and Carbon Hill High School student, Jarratt Turner, 17. Jarratt was killed when the 1999 Ford truck he was driving left the roadway and collided with a tree. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash occurred on Old Highway 78 near Hickory Hill Rd.  Nothing further is available as Alabama State Troopers continue to investigate.  –  Richard Itter – Hamilton Post – ALEA

The Haleyville High Lady Lions basketball team defeated the Winfield High Lady Pirates Friday night 75-60. The Varsity HHS Boys defeated Winfield 64-49. The Lions will play Carbon Hill at home Tuesday night. You can hear the play by play with Craig Wakefield and David Albright on Paradise 92.7. Thursday night will be senior night, (the last home game) against Wilson.

At the request of the Red Bay Police Department, on January 2, the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) opened an investigation into allegations of abuse made against an assistant in the Reb Bay school system. Information gained from the investigation led to the arrest of  James Lamar Horton on January 24, 2018, for the following charges: 4 counts of Indecent exposure, 2 counts of Sexual abuse of a child under the age of 12, and 1 count of Criminal surveillance.  Horton was incarcerated at the Franklin County Detention Facility without incident and during a bond hearing earlier today, he received a bond of $200,000.  Individuals with concerns or information pertaining to the investigation may contact the SBI Region E Russellville Office at (256) 436-1344.

The Haleyville Board of Education met Tuesday evening and approved the Board expenditures for December in the amount of $1,322,368.27. Other items approved were the amendments to the General Administration Policy Program, the 2018 HHS golf schedule, two requests for use of facilities, two field trips, and six fundraisers.

The Haleyville City Council met Monday evening with all members present. After approving the operation bills and purchase orders for last month in the amount of$449,697.12, the Council quickly approved the final corporation paperwork for the Haleyville/Winston County Healthcare Authority Board. The Council approved a loan for up to $1,500,000.00 which the Authority can use to purchase the Lakeland Hospital. Next came the approval of a Letter of Intent to purchase the hospital. The exact amount of the purchase will not be disclosed until the sale is final according to City Attorney Jeff Mobley who explained there is a non-disclosure clause in force during the negotiations. Once the sale is finalized, it will be made public. Mayor Sunseri explained this is a very complex project, requiring approvals from State and Federal agencies. With the 60 day extension for the announced shutdown, the prospects look good for transferring ownership and operation of Lakeland Hospital within that time.

The last two items approved was the advertising for Park and Recreation Department Seasonal employees and sports complex concession employees.

The next regular session of the Haleyville City Council will be Monday, February 5.        

Haleyville, Double Springs, Arley

Free Preparation of Federal and State Returns for Tax Year 2017 will be available from the Winston County AARP Tax-Aide sites with locations in Haleyville and Double Springs.  Volunteers will prepare and electronically file federal and state tax returns for taxpayers with low and middle incomes.  You do not have to be a member of AARP, a retiree, or a certain age to use this service. Please note that those taxpayers with complex tax returns will be advised to seek professional tax assistance. These tax sites were developed thru collaboration between the IRS, AARP Tax-Aide, Mayor Robinson of Double Springs and Mayor Sunseri of Haleyville. Continue reading

The Haleyville Rotary Club is hosting the first-ever Miss 9-1-1 preliminary pageant to the Miss Alabama-Miss America pageant system. The pageant will be held Saturday, Feb. 3, at the Haleyville Elementary School cafetorium. The pageant will begin at 3 p.m. and tickets are $10.

The event is being held in celebration of this year being the 50th anniversary of the first 9-1-1 call made in the nation in Haleyville. “This is an opportunity to promote that Haleyville is the birthplace of 9-1-1, an emergency system that is utilized nationwide,” pointed out pageant director Melica Allen.
