• Haleyville City Board of Education

    The Haleyville City Board of Education met Monday night with Beth McAlpine absent. The Board approved the expenditures for October in the amount of $1,412,780.49. A 30X9 foot Green House Frame was declared surplus, obsolete  or uneconomically repairable. The Board also approved amendments to the supplemental salary schedule and the High School Spring Fishing Competition Schedule. Two fund raisers were approved as well as approving the resignation of Amy Farris as Haleyville High Majorette Sponsor.

  • Haleyville City Council

    The Haleyville City Council met Monday with all members present and approved the general operation bills and POs for October in the amount of $335,009.66. Approval was made to apply for a rebuild Alabama Grant for the purpose of funding of roadway resurfacing improvements. Approval was made to purchase a field groomer for the Haleyville Park and Rec Department.

    Discussed at length, and then tabled was the purchase of a new fire truck to replace 36 year-old pumper #3. The Council wanted time to decide whether to purchase a new truck for $282, 936.98, or try to find a better price and the discover the problems other fire departments have had with their new trucks.

    The Council approved the purchase of 9 new computers, windows upgrades for 10 computers and a wireless upgrade for City Hall in the amount of $14,883.00.

    The resignation of Court Clerk Starla Watts was accepted along with the approval of Caroline Thompson to move to the Court Clerk Position with a pay adjustment. The City will be advertising for an Accounts payable Clerk and a part-time dispatcher for the Police Department.

    The next regular scheduled Haleyville City Council meeting will be on Monday, December 2, 5:30 at City Hall.

  • Two Missing Hikers Found

    According to relatives, the two hikers who went missing Friday while hiking the Sipsey Wilderness of the Bankhead Forest have been discovered and are safe. Michelle Pendelton and her friend Shannon Ladnier became lost while hiking to visit The Big Tree in the Sipsey Wilderness on Friday, November 15. They left around 9:30 a.m. according to a family member.

    Later that same day around 4:30 p.m., Michelle and Shannon called the sheriff’s department from a cell phone to say they were lost. The sheriff’s department told them to stay put. It’s not clear if Michelle and Shannon ever made it to The Big Tree. The Sipsey Big Tree is an 8.5 mile trail near Haleyville.

    A search party went to their last known location Saturday morning but couldn’t locate either woman. There was no contact with them since Saturday night.

    Family members and the sheriff’s department were in the woods searching for the women until they were discovered on Sunday.

     

  • Lynn Man Killed in Crash

    ALEA-HAMILTON POST — A single-vehicle crash at 9:50 p.m., Friday,  November 15, 2019, has claimed the life of a Lynn, AL man.  Adam Kenneth Godwin, 40, was killed when the 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser he was driving exited the roadway and overturned. Godwin was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash occurred on Summerville Rd., 5 miles east of Jasper, AL. Nothing further is available as Alabama State Troopers continue to investigate

  • Train vs Truck

    An 18-wheeler carrying fresh-cut logs from Walker County was struck by a northbound Norfork-Southern freight train Thursday morning. The driver of the truck, 63-year-old Ricky Odom said this was the first time for him to make a delivery to the lumber yard in Delmar and did not know there was a better place to turn off of Highway 13. He said he saw the train as he crossed the tracks, but the train was closer and faster than he anticipated. The train hit the trailer, slung it around beside the track leaving the driver trapped in the cab within a couple of feet of the still-moving train. The train did an emergency stop. Fortunately, the driver suffered no apparent physical injuries. When asked about his family, he stated he had lost his wife earlier this month and was still recovering from his loss.

  • Winston Sheriff Announces Resignation

    Winston County Sheriff Tommy Moore presented a letter of resignation at a meeting of the Winston County Republican Party Monday night. Reportedly his resignation will become effective November 30. Sheriff Moore stated the resignation was for health issues.

    Governor Robert Bentley appointed Moore as the Sheriff of Winston County assuming his duties on March 14, 2016, following the resignation of Sheriff Hobby Walker. Moore had been working as the investigator for the District Attorney for 18 years and had 27 years in law enforcement at that time. He was chosen over five other candidates whose names were submitted to the governor. Moore was elected Winston County Sheriff in the mid-term elections held in November 2018.

    Two Haleyville men are reportedly under consideration for an appointment from Governor Kay Ivey to fill out the rest of Moore’s term. David Cummings, presently serving as a Winston County Commissioner and Horace Moore, publisher of the Northwest Alabamian newspaper.

  • Veterans Celebration at FUMC

    The Haleyville First United Methodist Church hosted a veterans celebration on Tuesday evening, November 12. The FUMC Fellowship Hall was filled with local veterans, their friends and family, and the Haleyville High School Band. In addition to the HHS band, The Haleyville Community Choir performed a choral tribute with “God Bless America.” The audience heard the VFW Voice of Democracy speech winner, John M. Mayhall. Guest speaker Larry Hunter told the attendees about his book about his experiences in Vietnam including exposure to “Agent Orange” and cancer it caused he is presently fighting today. Chaplain (Lieutenant Colonel)Mitch Nethery, (FUMC Minister) introduced the Keynote Brigadier General roger A. Presley, Jr.  General Presley spoke about the organizational structure of the Alabama National Guard.

  • Veterans Day Activities

    The Haleyville American Legion Post #33 Veterans Day activities were held Saturday, November 9.  The wreath-laying ceremony at the War Memorial was done by Tina Bush, the Senior Vice Commander of the Alabama American Legion.  The Veterans Day parade followed the ceremony. Veterans and their families enjoyed a delicious luncheon at the Legion Hall following the parade.

    Out of 120 men deployed in 1951-52 from the 107th Trucking Company of Haleyville National Guard, only 15 remain, and two of those are M.L. Weaver and Neal Masters who road together in the parade. There were no WWII participants this year.

  • Haleyville City Council

    The Haleyville City Council met Monday with Blue Russell absent. The Council approved the minutes of the last two council meetings and approved applying for a Rebuild Alabama Grant to resurface several of the streets in Haleyville. The Rebuild Alabama Act Grant was derived from the recently imposed gas tax. This grant, if approved, would be for $350,000 for street resurfacing, drainage issues and engineering and does not require matching funds.

    Blue Russell was appointed to a one year term on the Haleyville Water Board.

    The next scheduled meeting of the Haleyville City Council will be on Monday, November 18, 5:30 p.m., Haleyville City Hall.
