Election Results
Super Tuesday went smoothly for area voters, despite the rain, turnout for a primary and caucus election was good. The total number of voters was 6,507 with 6,023 Republicans and 459 Democrats.
Here are the results of the election for local and area offices.
For Circuit Court Judge, incumbent Judge John Bentley won with 3,315 votes in Winston County and 4,109 in Marion County for a total of 7,424. Suzanne Childers received 1,660 votes in Winston and 1,918 in Marion for a total of 3.578.
For Constable Winston County Precinct 1, Mark Farris won with a total of 566 over Ron Alexander 375.
Congressman Robert Aderholt received 4,348 and his opponent Phil Norris had a total of 1,191. Senator Shelby carried Winston County with 3,433 versus 1,649 votes for Jonathan McConnell.

HES Kindergarten Registration
Haleyville City Schools will hold kindergarten registration on Friday, March 18, 2016, from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Registration will be held at the Haleyville Elementary School library. A child being registered for kindergarten must be five (5) years old on or before September 1, 2016, before he/she can attend school for the 2016-2017 school year. Due to current Board of Education policy, only students currently living in the Haleyville City school district will be allowed to register. Parents or guardians registering prospective kindergarten students are encouraged to bring the following:
- The child’s birth certificate
- Blue immunization certificate showing that the child has had all of the required immunizations: D.P.T., polio, measles, and mumps. ALABAMA STATE LAW REQUIRES PROOF OF THE IMMUNIZATIONS BEFORE A CHILD CAN ENTER KINDERGARTEN OR FIRST GRADE
- Social Security Card
- Proof of residency
- Custody Papers (if applicable)
- Driver’s License of parent/guardian
A team of Kindergarten teachers will be administering the HES Kindergarten Screener to all children who will attend kindergarten in the fall of 2016. Thus, it will be necessary for you to bring your pre-school child with you to registration so we can administer this short screening instrument. We plan to make this a fun experience for the children. You can help by planning to make this a special outing for you and your pre-schooler. In an effort to avoid over-crowded conditions and give each child individual attention, we ask that you adhere to the following schedule:

M-Z 12:00-2:30
We realize that some of you work and can only come at certain times. We will adjust our schedule to accommodate working parents.
It is important that all parents or guardians register eligible children on March 18.

Public Hearing/City Council Meeting
The City Council of Haleyville will meet for a public hearing at 5:15 P.M. on February 16, 2016 in the new Haleyville City Hall Courtroom located at 911 21st Street for the purpose of considering an application for assistance submitted by Bravo Food Service, LLC pursuant to City of Haleyville Ordinance Number 2013-03. Bravo Food Service, LLC has requested assistance from the City in the form of a sales tax rebate to assist in the development of commercial property within the City Limits of Haleyville which is projected to create at least eight (8) or more jobs in the operation of a restaurant to be constructed in the Village East Shopping Center lot in the City of Haleyville. During this public hearing there will be presentation by the developer and the general public will be given the opportunity to comment on the proposed action.
The Haleyville City Council will meet at 5:30 following the public hearing.

Leo’s Loveliest Ticket Sales
The Annual Haleyville High School Leo’s Loveliest Pageant will be Friday, February 26th for Junior Division and Saturday, February 27th for senior division. The pageant will begin at 7:30 each night at the Haleyville Elementary Cafetorium.
Leo’s reserved tickets for junior and senior contestants only will be on sale Tuesday, February 16 and Wednesday, February 17. Tickets for junior division contestants will be sold at the Middle School and Sr. Division contestants will be sold at the Center of Technology Office. Tuesday ticket sales will begin at 7:15 a.m. On Thursday, February 18, reserved tickets for escorts will be available. Reserved tickets will be available to the public on Friday, February 19. Reserved tickets are $7 each and general admission is $5. Anyone needing special accommodation seating please call the Haleyville Center of Technology office at 486-9481.

Holly Ward Makes the Sports News at MSU
Haleyville’s own Mississippi State University Sophomore Holly Ward recorded a career-high eight strikeouts.

HHS Basketball
The Haleyville Lady Lions played in the area championship on Wednesday against Danville. Although the Lady Lions fought hard, the Danville Lady Hawks came away the winner with a final score of 86-51. As the area runner-up, the Lady Lions will face the Deshler Lady Tigers in Tuscumbia on Monday at 7:00 PM.
The Haleyville Lions hosted the Hamilton Aggies Thursday night for the area championship. The game was clean with few fouls and mostly a defensive strategy game. Haleyville claimed the area 13 championship title with a final score of 54-45. Congratulations to both teams. The Haleyville Lions will now be the host for the first round of the sub-regionals to be played on Tuesday at 7:00 PM.

Two Shot and Killed in Hamilton

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA)’s State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), today, Feb. 10, responded to the scene of an active shooter and subsequent double homicide in Marion County. The homicides occurred in separate locations in downtown Hamilton.
The initial investigation reveals Marion County Sheriff Deputies and a Hamilton Police Officer engaged the active shooter at a third location, the First State Bank. Additionally, a private citizen reacted and assisted law enforcement in the exchange of gunfire with the suspect. Whereupon, the suspect Jimmy Cooper, 57, of Hamilton, was struck by gunfire and was taken into custody. SBI will investigate the officer involved shooting involving Cooper.
The Hamilton Police Department will lead the double homicide investigation where Donny Miller, 67, and Linda Cole, 61, both of Hamilton, were killed.
“Although, we will conduct a thorough investigation of the officer involved shooting, the initial indication is that the deputies, officer and private citizen acted without hesitation and probably prevented the further loss of life,” said Secretary of Law Enforcement Spencer Collier.
Cooper is recovering, suffering from non-life threatening wounds at UAB under guard by ALEA.
No additional information is available as the investigation is ongoing.

VFW Awards Program
The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW)Post 4543 held a special program for the district winners of the Voice of Democracy (VOD) and Patriot Pen awards on Monday night, February 8. The winners of the VFW District 1 VOD, 2nd place, Amelia Townsend, Patriot Pen Winner, 2nd place, Reagan Kutis and the Patriot Pen District first place and state winner (sponsored by the Falkville VFW Post), Maggie Robertson from Haleyville were presented by the VFW District Commander, Jerry Willibey,
Guests for the event included Haleyville Schools Superintendent of Education, Dr. Alan Miller, Middle school Principal Bo Wilcoxson, and Beth Townsend, school sponsor of the VOD program.
