The Haleyville Rotary Club annual BBQ dinner is this afternoon before the Haleyville/Cordova football game at the Haleyville Middle School cafeteria. Tickets are available at any of the three schools offices or at the door. Serving will begin at 4 p.m. Drive-thru pick up will on the side of the school will be available if you already have tickets.

Proceeds go back to schools from the Rotary Club to help fund academic motivational programs for students.

The Haleyville City Council met Tuesday afternoon with all members present. After approving the minutes for the last regular and one special meeting, the Council approved Calvin Cassady as the engineer for airport planning services. The Cassady Company was then approved to oversee a grant for the Haleyville airport specifically for the renovation and construction of several new enclosed aircraft hangers.

A change order for the new sports complex was approved. The photo above shows sod being installed at the new complex.

The next meeting of the Haleyville City Council will be Monday, September 19.

For the first time since 1970, the Haleyville High School Lions varsity football team shut out the Hamilton Aggies Friday night 42-0 in Hamilton! The Haleyville/Hamilton rivalry has been the NW Alabama high school version of the Alabama/Auburn game for decades. Over the years, both sides have had their share of wins, but a shut out is a rarity.

The Haleyville High School Cross Country team traveled to McFarland Park in  Florence on Tuesday for their season opener at the Brooks Invitational Class 1-4A XC meet. The team came home with their first win of the season, placing #1 in overall points.  Jaquan Caine placed 3rd, Tristan Carter 6th, and Hamza Abussamour 7^th.  Aly Donaldson also finished 4th for the girls.  According to MileSplit, the Haleyville High School boys XC country team is #47 out of the top 100 teams to watch across all classifications (1A-7A)! They boys are preseason #5 in 4A!

On Monday, August 24, a confidential informant told Winston County Deputy Sheriff Eddie Collins there was a large amount of marijuana in a Shady Brook apartment in Haleyville. Based on that information, Collins obtained a search warrant and notified the Haleyville Police Department. Jason Williams, Rodney Lewis and Tim Steien of the Haleyville Police Department came to assist. Inside they found thirteen one ounce bags of marijuana, a small amount of cocaine and Indica cannabis, which is new to this area. Indica cannabis is marijuana in the form of candy. There were also scales and drug paraphernalia and a 45 cal pistol. Darius Brown(photo right), the occupant of the apartment arrived and admitted the drugs did belong to him.

Meanwhile, the Winston County Sheriff’s office had received information there was marijuana being sold from 248 Lakeshore Drive by Carlton Whiteside(photo left) Both locations are near each other and as it turned out, with Winston county Sheriff’s Investigator Josh Silas, Reserve Deputy Heather Hardy and a state probation officer who had originally obtained the information from Whiteside met and searched the Whiteside residence. There they found 11 plastic bags containing approximately one ounce of marijuana in each. They also found a Mossberg .22 cal rifle.

Within two hours, officers had arrested two people on the drug charges, plus while that was going on, another deputy arrived with a completely different search warrant and arrested two others with drug paraphernalia in a nearby apartment.

In the two initial busts, Carlton Lee Vaughn Whiteside, 25 was charged with distribution of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana first degree, possession of drug paraphernalia and a probation violation.

Darius Brown was charged with possession of marijuana 1st degree, unlawful possession of controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia Both are being held in the Winston County jail.

The Haleyville Lions football team defeated Winston County Friday night in Double Springs 47-22. On the road again this week, the Lions travel to Hamilton to take on the Aggies. Kickoff time this Friday night and all season is 7 p.m. The first home game will be September 9 against Cordova.

Suzanne Hood ask for your help. She has organized a drive for flood victims in Louisana. Originally from Louisana, Suzanne has a sister and other family members in the area which was flooded in the last couple of weeks. Suzanne is married to Ricky Hood, who works at McGriff Tire in Haleyville. With help from Doug Brakefield, the three spent Thursday collecting items they will take to Hammond, Louisana tonight. Exxel Outdoors has donated sleeping bags, McGriff rented a Uhaul truck and trailer and members of the Civitan and Rotary Clubs have made donations, but much more is needed. Donations should be taken to County Line Church, on County Line Road, just off Dime Road by 6 p.m. today.

Here is a suggested list of items needed. Please bring new, unopened items which can be purchased at Dollar General, Fred’s or Wal-Mart.

Bibles, bleach, feminine products, soap, shampoo, conditioner, hand sanitizer, pillows, pillow cases, blankets, brooms, mops, sponges, paper towels, sleeping bags, towels, washcloths, toothbrushes, toothpaste, air mattresses, bottled water, toilet paper, anti-bacterial hand soap, paper plates, garbage bags, diapers and wipes, laundry baskets, Clorox and Lysol wipes, canned Lysol, deodorant, underwear, (men, women and children, all sizes). Tylenol, Advil, and Aleve.

Also needed are tear-out tools. These do not need to be new, just useable. Hammers, flat crowbars, square tipped shovels, wheel barrels, sheet rocks cutters, box cutters, chalk line, gloves, dust masks, squeegees, and push brooms.

Clothing is not needed at this time. There is no place to put it. Bring all donations to the County Line Church by 6 p.m. today. Money donations will be accepted to pay for gas and expenses.

Aout 8:30 Thursday night, Bill West, 65, was traveling south on Highway 13 in his 73 Ford Ranger and had slowed to turn into the Wavahoo station when a driver behind him became distracted looking at a Haleyville Police car and officer issuing a ticket next to the Wavahoo. The Ranger was struck from the rear hard enough to knock into the parking lock and came to rest upside down near the gas pumps.

Because both West and the driver of the other vehicle were wearing seat belts, no one sustained any serious injuries. Haleyville Police investigated the accident.
