The Haleyville City Board of Education met Tuesday and approved the expenditures for February in the amount of $1,346,348.29. Other approvals were made for the two use of facilities requests, three field trips, and four fundraisers. In personnel, the Board approved one maternity leave and one catastrophic illness requests. Contracts were approved for Cindy Marbutt, CFO, Richard Bo Wilcoxson, principal of HMS, and Christy Bice, Principal of HES. Eight members of the HMS and HES summer STEAM Camp were approved.

Due to the potential for severe weather moving into North Alabama in the afternoon/evening hours on Monday, March 19th- All HCS students will be dismissed at 12:00 pm and there will be no extracurricular activities. Students who drive cars at HHS will be dismissed at 11:45 to help with traffic flow. We hope this gives our parents time plan. Student safety is our top priority and we encourage your family to stay weather aware as this system moves through our area tomorrow.

All other Winston County Schools will dismiss at noon also.

HAMILTON-On March 15, 2018, at approximately 1:30 p.m., officers with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office and the Hamilton Police Department attempted to serve an involuntary commitment order at a residence located in the 200 block of Robin Road, Hamilton, Alabama. At some point after the officers arrived at the residence, the subject they were attempting to locate approached them while armed with a knife.  A brief altercation occurred and one of the deputies discharged his firearm causing nonfatal injuries to the subject, who was transported to the North Mississippi Medical Center-Hamilton by ambulance.  Physicians at the North Mississippi Medical Center-Hamilton determined he needed more advanced medical care and had the subject airlifted to the North Mississippi Medical Center-Tupelo.  The subject’s condition is not known at this time.  At the request of the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, the State Bureau of Investigation responded to the residence and their Agents are currently investigating the incident.  As the incident is currently under investigation, no other information is available at this time.

HALEYVILLE-A fire of unknown origin destroyed a storage shed behind the home of Jason Godsey on 30th Street. When the fire was detected at approximately 5:30 Friday, it was spreading to an adjacent storage building dry leaves was taking the fire toward the home of a neighbor. jason used a water hose until the Haleyville Fire Department arrived. Firemen were on the scene for approximately an hour making sure it was completely out. Jason stated he hated losing his zero turn lawn mower and his tools, but glad the fire was contained to just the one building.

DOUBLE SPRINGS – A fire destroyed the home of Freddy and Cyndi Tidwell Wednesday morning. The house was located off Highway 278 west of Double Springs. A passing motorist saw the fire and stopped at the shop of F&C Logging located nearby where Cyndi was working and told her the house was on fire. The Double Springs Fire Department responded and quickly called for help from Haleyville and other area fire departments. The dry and windy weather conditions accelerated the fire. The house and contents were a total loss. The cause of the fire is unknown.

Haleyville – A call at approximately 4:30 Thursday morning reporting a theft from Walmart resulted in a long intense chase by Haleyville Police aided by Winston County Deputies. The chase ended on Highway 278 just west of Cullman County. Reportedly, Michael Dylan Tittle, 23, Jasper left Walmart in a stolen truck and was pursued by Haleyville Police SGT Steve Hicks. The vehicle Tittle was driving left the highway and crashed. Tittle ran from the scene and attempted to hide in a wooded area. He was apprehended by Hicks and transported to the Lakeland ER for examination, then taken to the Winston County jail. He is charged with theft of property 4th degree, reckless endangerment and attempting to elude a police officer. Tittle was already being sought for escape 3rd degree.
