Since 1973, Wiley and Vicky Dean have operated the Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise at the corner of 10th Avenue and 21st Street in Haleyville. After 45 years, the Deans decided to sell, but retirement is not exactly in the plan. Vicky will stay on through May for the transition and Wiley is starting a new service company.  The new owner of the Haleyville, Hamilton, and Fayette KFC stores, is KBP Foods, of Overland Park, KS. the company already owns and operates 570 stores. Local employees will see increased benefits such as health insurance and a retirement plan to be offered by the larger company.

Both Wiley and Vicky have been very active in local civic clubs and have contributed much to our city. Wiley has served as a Haleyville City Councilman and as a national legislative liaison with KFC. While they have no plans to leave Haleyville, their friendly faces will be certainly be missed at KFC.

The Haleyville City Council conducted a very short meeting Monday with Jonathan Bennett absent. With only one item on the agenda, the Council approved the recommendation of the Zoning Board for a variance for streetside parking for KFC.

The next meeting of the Council will be Monday, April 16.

A house fire at 6:45 Saturday morning destroyed the home of Craig and Tricia Baggett on George Avenue in Haleyville. The Baggetts and their young daughter had gone to eat breakfast and were not home at the time. The house and contents were a total loss. The Haleyville Fired Department responded to the fire, but the house was fully engulfed when they arrived. The cause of the fire is unknown.

Haleyville Mayor Ken Sunseri stated at 4:30 p.m. Friday afternoon the legal paperwork was just being completed in order for the Haleyville/Winston County Hospital Board to take ownership of the Lakeland Community Hospital on April 1. The hospital will be managed by the Java Medical group.

Mayor Ken Sunseri stated all the legal paperwork should be completed today on the on the transfer of ownership of the Lakeland Hospital from Curae to the Haleyville/Winston County Hospital Board. It has been a long drawn out process with last-minute problems created by Curae, but it should be completed by the end of business today. Tomorrow, March 31 is the last day of the 3-month extension for the announced closure. You can really see ground handling is the most difficult thing to master. The nose gear is located 35 feet behind the pilot’s seat and like all airplanes, its a tricycle. Watch all the way thru takeoff. The wingspan is 227 feet, 28 wheels, gross weight close to 800,000 lbs. With two sets of main landing gear, the aft pair castor as it turns. The tail is 6 stories high, the cockpit is 30 feet off the ground. Mildenhall is a Royal AFB about an hour north of London. One of my favorite places to visit. The C-5 nickname is Fred, the autopilot is George. Awesome aircraft built at Lockheed in Marietta, GA. The first ones built was in the late 60’s and the last ones built were in the 80’s. All have been completely updated with new GPS navigation systems and “glass” cockpits. The GE-TF39 engines produce 41,000 lbs of thrust each. It’s a hauling machine. Loved flying it. A wingless Boeing 747 would fit inside. The first flight by the Wright Brothers could have taken place in the cargo hole, both in distance and altitude.

The Haleyville City Council met Monday with Drew Thrasher and Jonathan Bennett absent. Mayor Ken Sunseri and the three other Councilman still made a quorum and approved the February operation bills and purchase orders of $750,115.46. Two new police cars were purchased from the only bidder, John Carpenter Ford, for $23,569.08 each or a total of $47,120.16 for both.

The Council approved a resolution approving a funding agreement for the benefit of the Health Care Authority of Haleyville and Winston County and related transactions. The Authority proposes to issue a revenue bond or note for the purpose of financing the acquisition of Lakeland Community Hospital. The bond will be payable solely from revenues received by the authority from operations of the Hospital and from a certain funding agreement delivered by the City for the benefit of the Authority. The City previously passed a one-cent sales tax for the purpose of funding the Authority.

According to City Attorney Jeff Mobley, negotiations are still underway for the purchase of the hospital. March 31 is the last day the transaction can take place.

Haleyville Street and Sanitation will be closed for Good Friday, March 30.
