The Haleyville School Board met Tuesday night and approved seven items under new business, two requests for use of facilities, four field trips, three fundraisers, and amendments to the substitute teachers and lunchroom workers lists.

The biggest item was the personnel changes in the school system. Erika McCoy was given a probationary contract as the new Haleyville High Principal, replacing Dr. Holly Sutherland who will become the new Superintendent of Education.

Approval was given to the resignation requests from Savannah Smith and Emily Head.

New hires approved include Brenda Scogin, Dylan Burleson, Amber Lambert, Sergio Mederos, Michael Holloway, Jacob McCarley, Emily Taylor, Alyssa Elliott, Toni Rai Sartin, Whitley Yocum, and Alex Fragale. The Board approved the non-renewal of Enjoli Godsey, Amy Smith, and Holly Comeens.

Tenure was approved for Meagan Benford, Nichole Cook, Elaine Frix, Jayme Hall, Leigh Ann Hicks, and Lindsey Kilpatrick at the HES. Tenure was also approved for Elyse Aldridge, Lee Frix, Adam Lawler, Charles Moody, and Sarah Vice at HHS.

Non-probationary status was approved for Reeta Hood, Rita Butler, Paige Hooker, Kristie Hyde and Emma Anne Hallman. Two transfers and one leave for approved.

The graduation ceremony for 105 HHS seniors will be this Friday night at 8 p.m. at Bubba Scott Field.

This is Memorial Day weekend. In Haleyville, it means Friday night will be the graduation ceremony for 105 Haleyville High seniors at 8 p.m. at Bubba Scott Field.

The annual Coal Fest is this weekend in Brilliant, a celebration of the town’s rich coal mining history. The two-day festival begins Friday afternoon, May 26 with crafts, food, fun, music and an antique car show. Google or check Facebook for a schedule of events. Starting Friday night is the two-night Sheffield Street party, a fundraiser for Northwest Shoals Community College scholarships. Ads for the music lineup can be heard on Paradise 92.7.

The Haleyville High Golf Team made it to the state finals in Auburn Monday and Tuesday finishing third in the state. Congratulations to Coach Dusty Ball and the team of great golfers Reid Haughton, Rob Richards, Jack Lawson, J.B. Miller, Colton Russell and Eli Brannon.

The Haleyville High golf team is currently in 3rd place behind UMS Wright and Oneonta following play in the state finals. The team shot 320 on Monday. Individual scores were Rob Richards, 76, Colton Russell 84, J.B. Miller 80, Reid Haughton 80 and Jack Lawson 112. Today is the second and final day of play in Auburn.

The Haleyville City Council met Monday with all members present and approved the April general operation bills for $439,089.10. The Council approved new radios and phones from the Northwest Alabama Gas District. The phone service is being changed from Southern Link to AT&T. There will be 32 new radios and 10 phones.

Mayor Sunseri announced the U.S. flag at city hall is flying at half mast to commemorate Fallen Officers week. Following the regular session, the Council interviewed one candidate for Fire Chief and held a work session. The next meeting of the Haleyville City Council will be on Monday, June 5.

The Haleyville High School Seniors left Saturday morning by bus for Washington and New York. Telephone reports from the students can be heard on Paradise 92.7 each day at 12 noon, 2, 4 and 6 p.m.

The Fraternal Order of Police Free State of Winston Lodge #51, held a memorial service for the Fallen Officers of Winston County along with the dedication a new monument in their honor May 13,  on the steps of the courthouse. The Master of Ceremonies was Judge Bobby Aderholt with speakers  U.S. Congressman Robert Aderholt and Alabama Representative Tim Wadsworth.

Ashton Steele, 15, a Winston County High student was selected as the Miss 9-1-1- at the Haleyville Rotary Club Miss 9-1-1 pageant was held Saturday afternoon at the HES auditorium. She will be part of the 9-1-1 festivities on May 2-3 downtown Haleyville. The pageant was a fundraiser for the Rotary Club Toys for Kids Program. The Rotary Club thanks all the participants and sponsors who helped make the event a great success.

A single-vehicle crash at 9:20 a.m. today, May 13, has claimed the life of a Lynn woman.  Lydia Lenae Wilson, 44, was killed when the 2012 Toyota Camry she was driving left the roadway and overturned. Wilson, who was not using a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. The crash occurred on Winston County 59, two miles south of Lynn.  Nothing further is available as Alabama State Troopers continue to investigate.
