A two-vehicle crash at 8:40 a.m. Friday, May 5, has claimed the life of a Haleyville woman.  Hannah Dianne Bridgmon, 20, a 2015 graduate of Haleyville High School was killed when the 2015 Dodge she was driving collided with a 1997 Kenworth driven by Jared Nicholas James, 27, of Tuscumbia.  Bridgmon was pronounced dead at the scene, and James was transported to a local hospital. The crash occurred on Alabama 13 at the 279-mile marker, approximately four miles south of Phil Campbell.  Nothing further is available as Alabama State Troopers continue to investigate. – ALEA- Senior Trooper Johnathan Appling

The Haleyville City Council met Monday with all members present. After approving the minutes of the last meeting on April 17, the Council approved an ordinance to exempt certain “covered items” from the municipal sales and use tax during the “Back-To-School Sales Tax Holiday” as authorized in the Code of Alabama. The “Back-To-School Sales Tax Holiday will be the third full weekend of July beginning at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, July 21 and ending at twelve midnight on Sunday, July 23.

Mayor Sunseri announced the hiring of Brian Vickery as a patrolman at $11.55 per hour. Vickery was previously with the Russellville Police Department.

The next meeting of the Haleyville City Council will be Monday, May 15 at the City Hall.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has ordered a Beatrice, Alabama-based trucking company, Jeffery Finklea, doing business as J & L Trucking, USDOT No. 2479654, to immediately cease all interstate and intrastate operations after a federal investigation found the company to pose an imminent hazard to public safety.  J & L Trucking, which operates two trucks transporting general freight, was served the federal order on April 24, 2017.

On March 28, 2017, a truck operated by J & L Trucking crossed the centerline on Alabama’s State Highway 13 in Fayette County, colliding head-on with a passenger vehicle and fatally injuring both of its occupants who were from Double Springs.   Read more: Click here

Alma Rose Barber, a 10^th grader at Haleyville High School was recently accepted into the Auburn University 2017 Vet Camp for high school students that will take place in June. Auburn University School of Veterinary Medicine receives close to one thousand applications every year of which about 45 students are selected from all over the country.  Alma has previously attended Vet camp at Mississippi State and plans to attend either Auburn University or Mississippi State University to become a Veterinarian.

Alma Rose is a member of the National Honor Society, Junior Civitan Club, and a host of other clubs. She is a member of the Haleyville JV Softball team and is an avid barrel racer with her horse Addicus. She is the daughter of Chester and Kathy Barber and the granddaughter of Bill and Jewel Lakeman and the late Alma and Lewis Barber.

Lewis Barber, a 7th-grade student at Haleyville Middle School has been chosen as one of two students to represent the 4^th Alabama district this summer at Space Camp in Huntsville. He will receive a full scholarship for the week long SALSA program. Space Academy for Leading Students in Alabama (SALSA) is a program funded by the State of Alabama Legislature that awards a male and female student between the ages of 12 to 14 in the Fall of 2016, from every legislative district in Alabama a scholarship to attend a special session of Space Academy at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville Alabama. Since 1982, Space Camp has inspired more than 700,000 young men and women from around the world to engage in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, while exposing them to the leadership and teamwork skills that helped them succeed in their careers.

Lewis is a member of the National Junior Honor Society, Haleyville Middle School Band, HMS Baseball Team and HHS Varsity Cross Country Team.  He is the son of Chester and Kathy Barber and the grandson of Bill and Jewel Lakeman and the late Mrs. Alma Barber and Mr. Lewis Barber, all of Haleyville.

The Haleyville Board of Education met Tuesday and approved the financial statements and expenditures for March in the amount of $1,301,792.47. The Board also approved the HHS athletic supplement list, child nutrition rollover bids, one field trip, and four fundraisers.

The following were hired for the 2017-2018 school year: Andy Lambert, Katie Brewer, Hannah Fox, Mary Beth Pugh, Andrew Welborn, Gina Wilson, and Shirley Kelley. The Board approved the resignation of Anna Beck Yates and Victoria Pendley and the retirement of Betty Wakefield.

Following an investigation by Haleyville Police Investigator Tim Steien, a series of counterfeit $100 bills being distributed in the Haleyville area came to an end with the arrest of Kelly Lee Rogers, 28, Haleyville. The bills were reportedly purchased online from China. These $100 bills found their way to Auto Zone, Fred’s and First National Bank by a customer who wanted to know if they were real. The bills were passed by several different people including a home health nurse who received one from one of her clients. When questioned all stated they had received the bills from Rogers who was arrested on April 3 and charged with possession of forged instruments. He is presently in the Winston County jail with a total bail set at $210,000. Each $100 bill brought a separate charge with bail set at $30,000 for each of the 7 bills he had passed. A package of 100 fake bills cost $5.

In a unanimous decision, the Haleyville Board of Education selected Dr. Holly Sutherland to be the new Superintendent of Education. at a special called meeting of the Board Friday, April 21.

The Haleyville City Council met Monday with Jonathan Bennett and Drew Thrasher absent. The Council approved the March general operation bills in the amount of $497,092.07. A change order for the new sports complex for an asphalt wearing surface and striping for the parking lot was approved for $26,530.40 in cost overrun.  Another resolution was approved for the purchase of additional sod for the complex for beautification and erosion control at the entrance to not exceed $4,000. The council approved the purchase of crushed limestone to be used both at the complex and at the Haleyville airport for shoulders and parking. The purchase of entrance lighting from the parking area to the softball fields from Industrial Service was also approved for $1,515.00

The Council approved the transfer of a liquor license from Scott’s Quick Mart to Andy’s Quick Mart on Highway 195. The resignation of Haleyville Policeman Jonathan Oliver was approved. Oliver will begin working as a police officer for Bear Creek.

Mayor Sunseri announced hiring the following seasonal P & R employees to work in the concession stand at the Sports Complex: Leigh Ann Kiser @ $9.50/hour effective 4/6/17; the following at $9.50/hour effective 4/8/17: Claire Newell, Mary Lou Masters, Kimberly Thrasher, and Kara Thrasher. 

The next scheduled meeting of the Haleyville City Council will be Monday, May 1.
