• Opening Day for Sports Complex

    Mayor Ken Sunseri threw out the first pitch on field 3 at the new Haleyville Sports Complex Saturday morning, April 1. A large crowd attended the opening ceremonies of the new facility which featured the introduction of the city council and Dixie Youth volunteers. The multi-million dollar complex still has a few minor items to complete but is already in full use. If you have not seen it in person, drive up 9th Avenue and see the newest addition to the assets of the City of Haleyville.

  • Sports Complex Opens Saturday

    The public is invited to the opening ceremony for the new multi-million dollar Haleyville Sports Complex Saturday morning, April 1, at 10 a.m. Following the ceremony, the kids will take to the field for the first game at 11 a.m. Mayor Sunseri will throw out the first ball. The parking lot is paved, but not yet stripped. Other than a few other minor items to be completed, the complex will be in full use for the remainder of the summer.

  • Two Killed in Crash-Update

    A two-vehicle crash Tuesday, March 28, has claimed two lives.  Billy Ray Massey, 72, and Carolyn Walker Massey, 69, of Double Springs were killed when the 2006 Buick Lacrosse they were in collided with a 1996 Freightliner driven by James Gregory Garrett, 42, of Monroeville.  Billy Massey, the Buick’s driver, and Carolyn Massey, the passenger, were both pronounced dead at the sceneGarrett was transported to DCH Hospital in Tuscaloosa.  The crash occurred at 11:48 a.m. on Alabama 13 near the 229-mile marker, three miles north of Berry.  Nothing further is available as Alabama State Troopers continue to investigate.

  • Escapee Captured

    Just after 1 a.m. Thursday morning, March 30, law enforcement officers working into the night located and arrested Corey Dean, 22, in Carbon Hill. He was charged with second-degree escape and first-degree theft of property and returned to the Marion County jail from which he and another inmate had escaped on March 17. See previous stories on hbtv.us about the previous apprehension of the other inmate and the eight people arrested for aiding the two.

  • Phillips Elementary Kindergarten Registration

    Phillips Elementary School Kindergarten Registration will be Friday, March 31, from 8:00 thru 5:30.  Students must have the following to register:

    Birth Certificate, Original Alabama Blue Slip, SocialSecurityy Card, Proof of Residency, copy of custody or guardianship papers if applicable.  The registering student must be 5 years old on or before September to register.

  • Board of Education

    The Haleyville Board of Education met Tuesday evening which was the first meeting for the newest board member, Donna Jones. The Board approved the February expenditures in the amount of $1,284,111.09. Also approved were amendments to the supplemental salary schedule, continued use of CenturyLink and AT&T phone services, an amendment to the FY 17 budget, amendments to the athletics supplement list, and a bid for a new school bus in the amount of $96,999.00.

    The use of school facilities by four different organizations, six field trips, and ten fundraisers were also approved.

    The Board accepted the resignation of Shelly Cooper as high school teacher and Kathy Elkins as a custodian at HHS. Ryan Brewer was hired as the ISS Facilitator for HHS.

  • Drug Bust in Haleyville

    Based on a tip there may be drug activity at a house in South Haleyville, Investigators fromf the Winston County Sheriff’s office went to 804 5th Avenue to investigate Tuesday afternoon. Investigator Josh Silas and Investigator Brad Curtis made contact with Paul Garrard at his back door. Silas reported asked Garrard about the smell of marijuana coming from the house. Garrard replied he had smoked some earlier in the morning. When asked where it was located the two officers were taken inside the living room. There they found four clear plastic baggies containing approximately 22 grams of what was believed to be marijuana and one baggie containing a crystal substance believed to be approximately one-half gram of methamphetamine and numerous drug paraphernalia.

    Garrard was arrested and taken to the Winston County jail charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana 1st, felony drug paraphernalia and illegal possession of prescription drugs.

    Investigators Silas and Curtis were aided in the investigation by three Haleyville police officers.

  • One Escapee Caught

    Zepplin Kennedy, one of the two escapees from the Marion County jail last Friday was apprehended Tuesday at his grandmother’s house in Hamilton. His grandmother, 57-year-old Margie Annette Huddleston, was also arrested and charged with aiding and abetting. The other escapee, Corey Dean is still at large.

  • Haleyville City Council

    The Haleyville City Council met Monday night with Jonathan Bennett absent. The Council approved the February general operation bills for $564,872.10. The residential property of Greag and Cathy Glass located on Kilpatrick Dairy Farm Road was annexed into the city limits per their request.

    The Council approved a resolution opposing the Alabama State Senate Bill 31 and House Bill 58 which would exempt prescription drug sales from the calculation of gross receipts business licenses. The resolution points out the many services provided by the city to these businesses such as fire and police protection. The proposed bills would cause a loss of revenue to the City and be unfair to other types of businesses who would not have that advantage.

    The Council approved hotel and registration expenses for an annual conference for the city librarian. Ralph Trallo was appointed to the water board for a 6 year term.

    The resignation of Fire Chief Phillip Weaver, effective August 1, was accepted and the council will advertise for a new fire chief.

    Several seasonal lifeguards were hired for the summer along with ground workers for the park and recreational department.

    Six new volunteer firemen were added to the Haleyville Fire Department on the recommendation of Chief Weaver.

    The next scheduled Haleyville City Council meeting will be Monday, April 3.

  • Escapees Had Help

    Law Enforcement officials have been searching northwest Alabama and parts of Mississippi for the two men who escaped from the Marion County jail last Friday, March 17. See story on Cory Dean and Zeppelin Kennedy. http://hbtv.us/News-for-Haleyville/escaped-inmates/

    Meanwhile, eight people have been charged with aiding the fleeing men – five of them in Lamar County, and three of them in Marion County.

    Those arrested in Lamar County are:

    -Victoria Parker, 22, Kennedy, Hinder Apprehension of Escapee

    -Danny Parker, 48, Kennedy, Hinder Apprehension of Escapee

    -Randy Parker, 49, Kennedy, Hinder Apprehension of Escapee

    -Leslie Fields, 45, Millport, Hinder Apprehension of Escapee

    – Billy Funderburk, 46, Millport, Hinder Apprehension of Escapee

    Those arrested in Marion County are:

    -Rachel Parrish – 42, Hamilton, Hindering Prosecution, Aiding and Abetting, and Obstruction of Government Operations

    -Thomas Elinberg, 41, Hamilton, Hindering Prosecution

    -Ashley Tucker, 27, Hamilton – Hindering Prosecution

    Parris was arrested Friday; the other seven on Sunday.

    Marion County Sheriff Williams stated aiding an escapee is against the law and you will be prosecuted if you chose to do so.
