Workers for Tombigbee Electric Co-op have been in Haleyville in the past two weeks installing fiber optic cables for Freedom Fiber, a subsidiary of Tombigbee Electric. According to Steve Foshee, who heads the Tombigbee Co-Op, at a recent meeting of the Haleyville Rotary Club, work started in May with the installation fiber optics for the new high-speed internet service. Even though Tombigbee does not provide power to the Haleyville area, it has a working agreement with Alabama Power to use their poles to run the fiber cable. Mr. Foshee stated that the definition of high-speed internet service is at least 100mbs, both down and up and that is what will be available from Freedom Fiber. The Haleyville City Council met Monday with Jonathan Bennett and Blue Russell absent. After approving the minutes from the last meeting on May 20, the Council heard a report on the success of the 9-1-1 weekend from Jade Bice of the Haleyville Chamber of Commerce. Jade said the Friday night concert and Saturday festivities were a huge success. From the antique car show. the corn hole contest,  the children’s playground (manned by HES personnel) the parade and the many vendors coupled with a great weather day made it a perfect weekend event.

Mayor Sunseri announced the hiring of the following as Volunteer Firemen at the rate of $17.83 per call. Branden Roberts, Cameron Miller, Kyle Doss, Ethan McBroom, and Blane Godsey.

Preceding the 9-1-1 weekend, the Haleyville Area Chamber of Commerce hosted an awards dinner Thursday evening with plaques presented to several individuals for their work as a 9-1-1 Responders by Aubrey Haynes and Mike Evans for the Chamber. The first order of business at the HCS BOE meeting Tuesday was the election of Donna Jones as President and Chad Tidwell as Vice President of the Board. Both will assume their new positions at the next Board meeting in June. Shown above is the Superintendent of Education Dr. Holly Sutherland, Chad Tidwell, Donna Jones, and Barry Burleson, outgoing President.

The Board approved five general administration items including the board expenditures for April in the amount of $1,314,522.22. Two use of facilities, nine field trips, and three fundraisers were approved. There were 25 personnel changes made which included tenure for Suzanne Caldwell, Andrew Crisp, and Lauren Willis.

Mrs. Sandra Manasco was recognized by the Board for her years of dedicated service as a teacher and as a Board member. The Service With Pride Awards were presented in her honor.

The Haleyville City Council met Monday and approved the operation bills and purchase orders in the amount of $443,314.59. The Council approved a resolution which authorizes Mayor Sunseri to reject all bids on a neighborhood improvement project for streets, drainage, water, and sanitary sewer on 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th Avenues, 22nd and 24th Streets. The cost original cost estimate was approximately $700,000. The lowest bid was for $962,919.95. Thus all bids were rejected and a request the project be rebid.

The next scheduled meeting of the Haleyville City Council will be on Monday, June 3.
