2019 Outstanding Administrator Award Recipient, Dr. Holly W. Sutherland ’99 ‘00, Superintendent of Haleyville City Schools, Haleyville, Alabama

Each year, graduates of the Auburn University College of Education who have made outstanding contributions to the profession or the college are recognized at the Spring Awards and Recognition Ceremony.  One of these awards is the Outstanding Administrator Award which recognizes a graduate of the college who is in an administrative/supervisory role; e.g., superintendent, principal, director, supervisor, coordinator; can be from a school, university, agency, or community setting.

A local businessman and one time TV evangelist Stanley Adair announced on Thursday, April 11, he was a Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate. His public announcement as a candidate was in his hometown of Haleyville. Adair stated he was a supporter of Trump, pro-life and the 2nd amendment. A one vehicle crash at 5:50 a.m. on April 10, 2019, has claimed the life of a Russellville man. Larry M. Wade, 46, was killed when the 2000 Toyota Tundra, he was driving, left the roadway in a curve and overturned.  Wade was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash occurred on County Road 60, 4.5 miles north of Russellville. Nothing further is available as Alabama State Troopers continue to investigate.

The Rev. Sid Burgess, 70, a former pastor at the Edgewood Presbyterian Church from 1990 through 2013 in Homewood and an avid hiker was last seen at 11 a.m. Saturday at White Creek Falls in Double Springs. His vehicle was later found at the entrance to Randolph Trailhead where he had entered for a day hike. Although hampered by rain and nighttime darkness, over the weekend, search teams continued looking until he was located alive just before noon Tuesday, April 9. He was transported by ambulance to Princeton in Birmingham. Approximately 200 people are reported missing in the Bankhead every year. Fortunately, like Burgess, most all have a good ending.

Mr. and Miss Havala is the most prestigious award given at Haleyville High School. Teachers select twenty juniors and seniors based on academics, character, extracurricular activities, community and church involvement. They then compile their resumes, recommendation letters, an essay and participate in a rigorous interview with out-of-town judges.

A 5-month-old baby boy was pronounced dead at the Lakeland Hospital Tuesday, morning April 2 around 8 a.m. by Winston County Deputy Corner Tracey Yealock. Reportedly, the baby was brought to the hospital by the boy’s father. The baby had been left with his father by his mother around midnight Monday at the Imperial Inn Motel. The Haleyville Police Department is investigating awaiting a report from the Alabama Forensic Lab in Huntsville on the cause of death.

The Haleyville City Council met Monday, April 1 with Royce Benefield absent. The Council approved a resolution which assigns administration and collection service of sales, consumer’s use, and business license for the City of Haleyville to Public Resource Management Alliance Corporation. This will become effective on 1 June.

A second resolution approved by the Council was for declaring certain items of personal property which are no longer needed as being surplus and authorizing the disposal of the unneeded property. The Haleyville Fire Department responded to a house fire at 1850 Haley Avenue around 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon, March 24. The young couple who lived there was not at home at the time of the fire. The mobile home was a Ricky White rental. There were extensive fire, smoke, and water damage. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
