The Haleyville City Council met Monday with Drew Thrasher and Richard Bittinger absent. The Council approved installing LED lighting at the Boar Tush Industrial Area.

Mayor Ken Sunseri announced the hiring of two new law enforcement officers, Jordan Anderson and Skylar Handley,  effective December 5. Sunseri also announced that Santa would be available for visiting and photos at the City Hall following the Christmas Parade Friday evening.

The next scheduled Haleyville City Council meeting will be Monday, December 16, 5:30 at the Haleyville City Hall.

1. Job Qualifications: Must be a high school graduate or equivalent.
2. Must be able to communicate effectively with the public.
3. Must be 19 years old or older.
4. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Excel and Word required.
5. Must be familiar with basic accounting procedures and the maintenance of journal ledgers, cash receipt registers, and other accounting records and be familiar with data processing procedures.

Job Qualifications: Must be 19 years of age. Must be able to work days, nights, weekends, and holidays as needed. Shifts are 12 hours in length. Must have a valid Alabama driver’s license and no criminal record. Applications may be picked up at the Haleyville Police Department. The Haleyville City Board of Education met Monday night with Beth McAlpine absent. The Board approved the expenditures for October in the amount of $1,412,780.49. A 30X9 foot Green House Frame was declared surplus, obsolete  or uneconomically repairable. The Board also approved amendments to the supplemental salary schedule and the High School Spring Fishing Competition Schedule. Two fund raisers were approved as well as approving the resignation of Amy Farris as Haleyville High Majorette Sponsor.

The Haleyville City Council met Monday with all members present and approved the general operation bills and POs for October in the amount of $335,009.66. Approval was made to apply for a rebuild Alabama Grant for the purpose of funding of roadway resurfacing improvements. Approval was made to purchase a field groomer for the Haleyville Park and Rec Department.

Discussed at length, and then tabled was the purchase of a new fire truck to replace 36 year-old pumper #3. The Council wanted time to decide whether to purchase a new truck for $282, 936.98, or try to find a better price and the discover the problems other fire departments have had with their new trucks.

The Council approved the purchase of 9 new computers, windows upgrades for 10 computers and a wireless upgrade for City Hall in the amount of $14,883.00.

The resignation of Court Clerk Starla Watts was accepted along with the approval of Caroline Thompson to move to the Court Clerk Position with a pay adjustment. The City will be advertising for an Accounts payable Clerk and a part-time dispatcher for the Police Department.

The next regular scheduled Haleyville City Council meeting will be on Monday, December 2, 5:30 at City Hall.

According to relatives, the two hikers who went missing Friday while hiking the Sipsey Wilderness of the Bankhead Forest have been discovered and are safe. Michelle Pendelton and her friend Shannon Ladnier became lost while hiking to visit The Big Tree in the Sipsey Wilderness on Friday, November 15. They left around 9:30 a.m. according to a family member.

Later that same day around 4:30 p.m., Michelle and Shannon called the sheriff’s department from a cell phone to say they were lost. The sheriff’s department told them to stay put. It’s not clear if Michelle and Shannon ever made it to The Big Tree. The Sipsey Big Tree is an 8.5 mile trail near Haleyville.

A search party went to their last known location Saturday morning but couldn’t locate either woman. There was no contact with them since Saturday night.

Family members and the sheriff’s department were in the woods searching for the women until they were discovered on Sunday.

ALEA-HAMILTON POST — A single-vehicle crash at 9:50 p.m., Friday,  November 15, 2019, has claimed the life of a Lynn, AL man.  Adam Kenneth Godwin, 40, was killed when the 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser he was driving exited the roadway and overturned. Godwin was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash occurred on Summerville Rd., 5 miles east of Jasper, AL. Nothing further is available as Alabama State Troopers continue to investigate

An 18-wheeler carrying fresh-cut logs from Walker County was struck by a northbound Norfork-Southern freight train Thursday morning. The driver of the truck, 63-year-old Ricky Odom said this was the first time for him to make a delivery to the lumber yard in Delmar and did not know there was a better place to turn off of Highway 13. He said he saw the train as he crossed the tracks, but the train was closer and faster than he anticipated. The train hit the trailer, slung it around beside the track leaving the driver trapped in the cab within a couple of feet of the still-moving train. The train did an emergency stop. Fortunately, the driver suffered no apparent physical injuries. When asked about his family, he stated he had lost his wife earlier this month and was still recovering from his loss.

Winston County Sheriff Tommy Moore presented a letter of resignation at a meeting of the Winston County Republican Party Monday night. Reportedly his resignation will become effective November 30. Sheriff Moore stated the resignation was for health issues.

Governor Robert Bentley appointed Moore as the Sheriff of Winston County assuming his duties on March 14, 2016, following the resignation of Sheriff Hobby Walker. Moore had been working as the investigator for the District Attorney for 18 years and had 27 years in law enforcement at that time. He was chosen over five other candidates whose names were submitted to the governor. Moore was elected Winston County Sheriff in the mid-term elections held in November 2018.

Two Haleyville men are reportedly under consideration for an appointment from Governor Kay Ivey to fill out the rest of Moore’s term. David Cummings, presently serving as a Winston County Commissioner and Horace Moore, publisher of the Northwest Alabamian newspaper.
