Several local schools and churches have hosted programs this week to honor our U.S. veterans in advance of Veterans Day Friday, November 11. Birmingham is having it’s famous Veterans Parade on Friday. The Blue Angels are performing Friday and Saturday at Pensacola Beach.

In Haleyville, the American Legion members and families will have their annual Veterans Day meal on Saturday 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Whitehead Post 33 Legion Hall.

Line up for the Veterans Day parade is at 1:30. Civic organizations, churches, and individuals are encouraged to be in the parade. The line up for vehicles and floats will be at the Haleyville Elementary School parking lot.

1:45 there will be a wreath-laying ceremony at the Veterans Memorial in front of CVS.

2 p.m. the Veterans Day Parade will proceed around downtown Haleyville.

It wasn’t just a win, but a big win for Scott Slatton who received an overwhelmingly large majority of the votes for District Attorney for Winston and Marion Counties. In Marion County, Slatton had 8,329 vs the incumbent Jack Bostick 3,905. In Winston County, it was Slatton with 8,311 votes vs Bostick 1,702. The totals were Slatton with 16,640 votes and Bostick 5,607.

It is obvious Winston and Marion voters followed their party selection for president when choosing the District Attorney. Trump won Winston County 9,225 to Clinton 871. In Marion County, it was Trump 10,905 to Clinton 812.

Congressman Robert Aderholt came home to Haleyville to vote today. He spoke to Paradise 92.7 about the connection Veterans Day this Friday, November 11 has to our freedom to be able to vote. He stated it is our military which has kept our country free allowing everyone citizen to vote in a free and open election. Polls are open till 7 p.m.

The Haleyville City Council met Monday evening for an organizational meeting. After a pledge to the U.S. Flag by members of Cub Scout Pack 97, Judge Mike Newell swore in the mayor and all five councilmen including the newest member George Russell.

The council immediately got down to business by appointing Richard Bittinger as Mayor Pro Tem. Rules of procedure, the appointment of the City Clerk and appointment of their legal council (Lowe, Mobley, Lowe) were all approved along with the appointment of the City Judge, (Jonathan Lowe) and appointment of the City Prosecutor (Scott Hunt).

The council ratified the depository bank, approved the appointment of Mayor Sunseri to the NW Gas Board, and Jonathan Bennet to the Water and Sewer Board. The mayor, Royce Benefield and Debra Hood were appointed to the Planning Board.

The council approved the retention of the Police Chief, fire Chief, Department Heads and city employees. The next city council meeting will be Monday, November 21.

The Haleyville Rotary Club Toys for Kids program last year was a great success. The Club had a lot of help gathering toys and distributing them to the needy families. Many thanks to all the businesses, churches, and individuals who gave so generously of their time and money to help those less fortunate. The Rotary Club was able to give toys to over 300 children in our local area helping families have a Merry Christmas.

The tradition continues. Please consider making a difference in a child’s life by making a donation. Sponsoring a child is just forty dollars ($40). You can also purchase one large toy and two smaller toys for the child you have selected. You can pick up a star with the child’s age and sex listed at Lakeland Community Hospital (see Whitney Hunsinger or Megan Welborn). This is a good idea if you have children so they can be involved in helping other children less fortunate and teach them the true meaning of Christmas.

Monetary donations and any new toy for this year’s program would be greatly appreciated. You can bring your donations to Alabama Power Office, First National, Trader’s and Farmers (3 locations) and Lakeland Community Hospital Emergency Department. Applications for the toys will be accepted now through November 18 at the Alabama Power Company Haleyville Office, Trader’s and Farmers Bank (3 locations), and First National Bank.  Lakeland Community Hospital will accept applications 24 hours, 7 days per week in the Emergency Department.

Qualifications for applications:

1. You must be a parent or legal guardian of the child.
2. You must provide proof of residence.
3. Only one application per child allowed.
4. Birth certificate or proof of guardianship will be required.
5. All applications must be received by the deadline of November 18 by noon.
6. No late applications will be accepted.
7. All toys must be picked up Friday, December 9 from 4:00pm to 7 p.m. at Paradise 92.7 Radio Station.

The Haleyville Lions football team was defeated Friday night by Hokes Bluff 24-8 which ended their quest for the state championship for this year. Haleyville did capture the region 6 championship title. The Lion of the Week is Brady Sherrill with 100 high school career touchdowns. Let the basketball games begin.

Tommy Arthur, 74, of the Shoals area with ties to Haleyville, was scheduled for execution at 6 p.m. Thursday, November 3rd. Arthur has once again successfully escaped execution for the 7th time while sitting on death row at Holman Prison. The stay this time was from the U.S. Supreme Court which acted on an appeal from the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals which refused to block the execution. Arthur had been convicted at three different trials and sentenced to death each time for the murder-for-hire shooting death of Troy Wicker of Muscle Shoals in 1982.

Arthur’s New York attorney filed an appeal based on Alabama’s lethal injection, arguing the method of execution was cruel and unusual punishment. The appeal was denied on Wednesday by both the Alabama Supreme Court and the U.S. 11th Circuit Court of Appeals. U.S. Supreme Court Justice stated he granted the stay as a courtesy.

Arthur was on work release in 1982 while serving a sentence for the 1977 shooting death of his sister-in-law at a business in Bear Creek when he killed Wicker. Both his sister-in-law and Wicker were shot execution style with one shot through the right eye. Arthur remains defiant and maintains his innocence.
