New Forest Service District Ranger
(Double Springs, AL) October 6, 2017 – The USDA Forest Service recently announced Andy Scott as the new district ranger responsible for the administration of approximately 181,000 acres of the Bankhead National Forest in northwest Alabama.
According to Carl Petrick, forest supervisor for the Conecuh, Talladega, Bankhead, and Tuskegee National Forests, Scott brings a wealth of leadership and scientific skills to the National Forests in Alabama. For 15 years, Scott worked with the Forest Service providing extensive collaboration with community stakeholders, partners, and Forest Service employees. He served as a research soil scientist for the Forest Service Southern Research Station in Pineville, LA, and Huntsville, AL.
“I’m very excited to join the great group of employees, partners, and volunteers that work hard every day to manage the beautiful Bankhead Ranger District,” said Andy Scott. “Together we will provide a productive, safe and enjoyable work environment to accomplish the best outcomes for the land to benefit its natural resources and the public.”
Scott earned a Ph.D. in forestry and forest products from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He also holds a Bachelor of Science in forest management from Purdue University and a Master of Science in forestry from Texas A&M University.
A native of Shoals, IN, Scott is a member of the Society of American Foresters, Soil Science Society of America and the Alabama Forestry Council. He is married to Debbie Scott and has three children.

Empty Bowls Dinner Thursday
The Empty Bowls Bicentennial Dinner will be this Thursday night, October 12 at the 5 p.m. at the Double Springs Municipal Building. Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for children. The proceeds go to the Winston County Arts Council and Main Street Ministries Food Bank. For your $15, enjoy a wide variety of delicious homemade soups plus your choice of a unique one-of-kind pottery bowl made by the pottery art class at Meek High School. Tickets available at the door.

HHS vs Madison Academy
TThe Haleyville Lions Varsity Football team was defeated by Madison Academy Friday night 52-0. The Lions played a great game but was just no match for the private school which does appear to have advantages when it comes to players and facilities. Their field boasts a Jumbotron once used by Vanderbilt and wireless microphones for the referees to announce their calls. The loss was not a regional game and it may be possible for Haleyville to see another game against Madison Academy in postseason play. The Paradise 92.7 Lion of the Week is Nick Sadler.
Haleyville will play a regional game this Friday night against Good Hope, at Good Hope.

9-1-1 Weekend Was a Hit!
Another fantastic 9-1-1 weekend in the books. Rain threatened early Friday night but held until noon on Saturday thus the concert and all the activities became another success story for the City of Haleyville.
Friday night the crowd continued to build into the evening in the parking lot behind the Haleyville library. On the 9-1-1 Festival stage, a new group of teen-aged girls known as Sweet Tea Trio welcomed the crowd with an acapella version of the National Anthem. The local group Tremayne opened the musical show, followed by Winston Ramble, Sweet Tea Trio and at 9 p.m. the headliner Lonestar brought the huge crowd to its feet with not only their hit song Amazed, but also several songs by Pink Floyd, Styx, and the Eagles.
An estimated record crowd of 5,000 plus came to the free concert. Street vendors, an antique car and tractor shows, musical entertainment and the annual 9-1-1 and HHS alumni parade provided much more on Saturday.

Crash on Highway 278 Claims Two Lives
A two-vehicle crash Wednesday, June 1, has claimed two lives. Phyllis Callahan Carter, 67, of Athens and Chester D. Brewington, 74, of Arley were killed when the 2012 Chevrolet Impala they were in collided head-on with a 2014 Hyundai Sonata driven by Joseph Poole, 52, of Stockbridge, Ga. Both individuals were pronounced dead at the scene, and Poole was transported to UAB Hospital in Birmingham. The crash occurred at 12:30 p.m. on U.S. 278 near the41-mile marker, three miles east of Addison. Nothing further is available as Alabama State Troopers continue to investigate.
