Mayor Fritz Lehmann and business leader Dieter Junge, of Uthleben, Germany, visited Haleyville Monday morning on an American tour sponsored by Judge Robert Aderholt. Mayor Ken Suneri presented the guests with keys to the city. The possibility of Haleyville and Uthleben becoming Sister Cities has been discussed.
Uthleben, in the northern part of the state of Thurignia, is a small village in what was East Germany. Lehmann said, “The greatest day in the 20th Century was the day the [Berlin] wall came down.”
The German pair saw their first "American Football" game Saturday night at Auburn. In every country except the United States, football means what Americans call soccer. After trips to Auburn, Birmingham and Haleyville, they are on to Washington.
Aderholt's Great Great Great Grandfather, Frederick William Aderhold, was born in Uthleben in 1748 and emigrated to America circa 1774. He fought in the Revolutionary War as a member of the York County [Pennsylvania] Militia.
