Thirty six former students of the Center School and one lunch room lady were present at the Galley Restaurant Friday, October 14, for an alumni gathering. Center school was one of many throughout the country built to be a community or neighborhood type school. This was before school bus transportation and dependable roads were available.
Center School was located across the road from the present day Sunny Home Church on County Road 11. The land for the school was donated by Mrs. Ells Batchelor in 1919. In 1920, there were 75 schools in Winston County, the majority having only one teacher.
Classes at Center ended at the beginning of the 1960-61 school year when only eitght students enrolled. Thoses students began attending other schools all brought about by better roads and school bus availablity.
