HPD Sgt. Rodney Shirley was injured in a traffic accident around 10 PM Friday night while responding to a call.

He sustained injuries, that are not life threatening, after his patrol vehicle left HWY13 S and flipped several times. He was treated at Lakeland Comminuty Hospital and then transported to UAB Hospital.

Haleyville Police were responding to an accident on Blake Curve when a citizen called 911 saying that she had just met a police car on HWY13 S and that she saw it in her rear-view mirror leave the road and flip several times. Dispatcher Craig Thomas immediately attempted to contact all HPD units. OFC Shane Whitten arrived on the scene and called for Fire Department assistance to extract Shirley from his vehicle.

LCH Head Nurse Amy Roden arrived shortly on the scene. Shirley was suspended by the seatbelt of his overturned SUV. Fire crews and off-duty HPD officers assisted with his extraction. RPS transported him to LCH. WCSO personnel and Delmar Fire assisted at the scene. Alabama State Troopers are investigating the accident. Shirley's K-9 was not in the vehicle.
