The “Tidal Wave” that swept across America Tuesday did not miss Alabama and the Republicans, according to unofficial results, will have the majority in both the House and the Senate in Montgomery.
Both Democratic leaders, Zeb Little in the Senate and Ken Guin in the House, were defeated. Interestingly, both their districts snake into Winston County. Winston County is represented in Montgomery by a hodgepodge of three House districts and three Senate districts. Before Tuesday's election, the seats were held by five Democrats and one Republican. If the results hold, those seats will be filled by two Democrats and four Republicans.
In the State Senate District 6 race, covering Haleyville, Senator Roger Bedford won re-election over Jim Bonner.
Republican control of the Alabama Legislature, its first in 136 years, comes as the legislature will soon tackle its decennial task of re-districting the state.
Winston County Republican Chairman Neal Cook said, "The Alabama legislature will be a much better place under the new Republican control. We have helped send some terrific new additions in Paul Bussman, Greg Reed, Ken Johnson, and our own Richard Baughn. I look forward to working with each of them to help advance Winston County."
Little, of Cullman, the Senate Majority Leader, served 12 years. Guin, of Carbon Hill, the House Majority Leader, served 16 years. Jody Letson (D-Hillsboro) was defeated in the House District 7 race. Letson served 14 years in the House.
