A swimming incident at 12:45 p.m. on Lewis Smith Lake Saturday, April 16 has claimed the life of a Hartselle teen. Carmen Elizabeth Johnson, 15, drowned while swimming with family off a boat dock at her family lake house near Lakeshore. According to authorities, Carmen and a friend had been swimming and jumping off their dock and while attempting to climb back on the dock by way of an aluminum ladder, she and her friend received a shock from an apparent electrical short on the ladder. Her father, Jimmy Johnson and brother jumped in the water to attempt a rescue and they both received an electrical shock. Carmen was pulled from the water by Haleyville Rescue Squad divers at approximately 2:45 pm and pronounced dead by Winston County Coroner Larry Gilliland. Her father and brother were not seriously injured by the shock and her female friend was transported by helicopter to Cullman. Her condition is unknown. Carmen's body was sent to the state forensics lab to determine the actual cause of death.
