An early morning fire Friday destroyed a two story barn-type house on County Highway 62 in Marion County. A neighbor noticed the fire and call 9-1-1 just before 5 a.m. The Haleyville Fire Department responded quickly but found the house already on the ground when they arrived. The house was owned by Charles Pickens who said his son Jason and Jackie Stone had been living in the house but were not home at the time of the fire. Mr. Pickens stated he had placed an oil-type space heater and set it on low in the kitchen to keep the pipes from freezing. It is not known what caused the fire, but the heater was the prime suspect. The house was a total loss.
