Alabama Power official inspects the damaged transformers

First responders worked to stop the spread of the oil into the storm drain.

There was a widespread power outage Saturday night and into Sunday morning in portions of Haleyville and the Pebble Community.  The cause of the outage was a broken power pole that fell to the ground, damaging three major transformers that were attached to the pole. It was located behind the old Piggly Wiggly on State Highway 195. When the poles hit the ground, the transformers exploded and leaked gallons of oil onto the ground. The Haleyville Fire Department, Haleyville Police Department, and Haleyville Street and Sanitation Department responded to the scene and worked to stop the spread of the material. Most of the oil was stopped before it reached the storm drain, and no further problems are expected from this incident.
