Bear Creek Police Chief Shane Whitten has reported a new scam in the area. This scam has been confirmed in both Bear Creek and Haleyville.

Local residents and businesses are receiving phone calls stating their Alabama Power accounts are past due and services will be disconnected if the bill is not paid within a time frame given by the caller. The caller then instructs the individual to go to CVS Pharmacy to buy prepaid money cards to use for payment and informs the individual this is the only type of payment that will be accepted. When he contacts the individual again, he asks for the numbers on the card.

If you receive this call, hang up immediately. Do not give out any personal information or credit card numbers. If you are concerned about your Alabama Power account, contact them directly. Also, contact the Haleyville or Bear Creek Police Department by calling the Dispatch Office at (205)486-5201 to report the call.
