The Haleyville Police Department responded to a call of a reckless driver on Alabama Avenue Tuesday evening around 6:30 p.m. When the officer arrived on the scene, the car had struck a fire hydrant, street signs, and a telephone pole at the intersection of Alabama Avenue and Byler Road before continuing down 9th Avenue and across State Highway 13. Because of significant damage and two blow outs to the front tires of the car, the driver abandoned the vehicle near the intersection of 9th Avenue and 28th Street. According to witnesses at the scene, the driver fled on foot into the woods before the officer arrived. The license plate on the vehicle also did not match. The incident is under investigation by the Haleyville Police Department.
