Hank Prochazka from Fontaine visited with the Haleyville Area Chamber of Commerce on Friday to give members an overview of Fontaine's status. Prochazka oversees several of Fontaine's business groups, including its Haleyville facility.
Currently in Haleyville, Fontaine employs just over 175 people. Company-wide, it employs over 300,less than 2006's 600, but more than 2009's 50.
Prochazka said, “I hate being a cyclic business.” He added that the company is concerned about 2013 being another down year and that downsizing may be required.
“Our business leads the economy”; he said, “Things that move on our trailers are what drive the economy.” And he should know, Fontaine's market is 30% of all trailers manufactured and the nearest competitor holds a 16% share. The sign that the economy is going to improve will be when trailer orders pick up again.
