The Haleyville City Council met Monday night with Jonathan Bennett absent. The Council approved the February general operation bills for $564,872.10. The residential property of Greag and Cathy Glass located on Kilpatrick Dairy Farm Road was annexed into the city limits per their request.

The Council approved a resolution opposing the Alabama State Senate Bill 31 and House Bill 58 which would exempt prescription drug sales from the calculation of gross receipts business licenses. The resolution points out the many services provided by the city to these businesses such as fire and police protection. The proposed bills would cause a loss of revenue to the City and be unfair to other types of businesses who would not have that advantage.

The Council approved hotel and registration expenses for an annual conference for the city librarian. Ralph Trallo was appointed to the water board for a 6 year term.

The resignation of Fire Chief Phillip Weaver, effective August 1, was accepted and the council will advertise for a new fire chief.

Several seasonal lifeguards were hired for the summer along with ground workers for the park and recreational department.

Six new volunteer firemen were added to the Haleyville Fire Department on the recommendation of Chief Weaver.

The next scheduled Haleyville City Council meeting will be Monday, April 3.

Meanwhile, eight people have been charged with aiding the fleeing men – five of them in Lamar County, and three of them in Marion County.

Those arrested in Lamar County are:

-Victoria Parker, 22, Kennedy, Hinder Apprehension of Escapee

-Danny Parker, 48, Kennedy, Hinder Apprehension of Escapee

-Randy Parker, 49, Kennedy, Hinder Apprehension of Escapee

-Leslie Fields, 45, Millport, Hinder Apprehension of Escapee

– Billy Funderburk, 46, Millport, Hinder Apprehension of Escapee

Those arrested in Marion County are:

-Rachel Parrish – 42, Hamilton, Hindering Prosecution, Aiding and Abetting, and Obstruction of Government Operations

-Thomas Elinberg, 41, Hamilton, Hindering Prosecution

-Ashley Tucker, 27, Hamilton – Hindering Prosecution

Parris was arrested Friday; the other seven on Sunday.

Marion County Sheriff Williams stated aiding an escapee is against the law and you will be prosecuted if you chose to do so.

The Civitan Auction will be Saturday night, March 25 at the First United Methodist Church. The BBQ dinner begins at 5:30 and the auction will begin at 6:30. BBQ dinner plates are $7.50 which includes BBQ, chips, beans, slaw, drink, and a dessert. Tickets can be purchased at the door or in advance by any Civitan member. All of the proceeds will go to the Arc and Civitan projects.

Inmates Cory Dean and Zepplin Kennedy escaped from the Marion County Jail at 1:32 AM on March 17, 2017. Dean is a 22-year-old white male and charged with burglary 3rd (7 counts), criminal mischief 3rd, criminal mischief 2nd, arson 2nd, and discharging a firearm into an unoccupied dwelling. Kennedy is a 20-year-old white male and charged with possession of pornography (31 counts) and production of pornography with a minor. Kennedy was last seen with a gray sweatshirt and white pants. Dean was last seen with gray short sleeve thirst and gray sweatpants. Subjects are being tracked by Alabama Department of Corrections K-9 Unit along with K-9 units with the Marion County Sheriff’s Department.

The State of Alabama has issued a Child Abduction Emergency, Amber Alert on behalf of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency ask for your assistance in locating Mary Catherine “Elizabeth” Thomas, white female, 15 years of age, 5′ 5″ tall weighing 120 pounds with blond hair and hazel eyes. Elizabeth Thomas was seen last wearing a flannel shirt and black leggings on March 13, 2017, and is believed to be in extreme danger. Elizabeth Thomas is believed to be in the company of 50-year-old Tad Cummins, white male, 6′ tall, weighing 200 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. The subjects are believed to be traveling in a silver Nissan Rogue bearing TN tag number 976ZPT. The ARC Easter pageant will be April 1 at 5 p.m at the Haleyville Elementary cafetorium, It is for girls ages 1-12. George R. Bolling, Jr, 55, was sentenced to two years in a federal prison for illegally dispensing opioid painkillers and other controlled substances. He was also sentenced on two counts of illegally transferring oxycodone, an opioid painkiller, between pharmacies he owned in Walker and Fayette counties. Bolling pleaded guilty to the charges in October of last year and will begin serving his sentence on May 8. The five pharmacies Bolling owned were located Berry, Fayette, Vernon, Jasper and Gateway Discount Apothecary in Double Springs. Bolling sold his pharmacies and as part of his plea and sentence, has forfeited his DEA registration numbers and his Pharmacy permits and license number. He also forfeited $75,000 to the government as proceeds of illegal activity. Bolling’s conviction was the result of a long-term investigation started in 2015.
