The bowls were not empty for at least 425 people at the Empty Bowls Dinner Thursday night at the Double Springs Municipal Building. Everyone enjoyed a host of savory crock pot soups and even two kinds of chili. The annual dinner is a joint project of the Winston County Arts Council and Main Street Ministries. Both will split the proceeds which totaled $5,615.  Both organizations thank everyone who came and enjoyed the fantastic food and just as important, a chance to socialize without a smartphone. It was a great evening!

A single-vehicle crash at 6:35 a.m. today, Oct. 12, has claimed the life of an Arley man.  Matt Cook Russell, 39, was killed when the 2005 Toyota Scion he was driving left the roadway and overturned. Russell, who was not using a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash occurred on County Road 41, 5 miles north of Addison.  Nothing further is available as Alabama State Troopers continue to investigate.

(Double Springs, AL) October 6, 2017 – The USDA Forest Service recently announced Andy Scott as the new district ranger responsible for the administration of approximately 181,000 acres of the Bankhead National Forest in northwest Alabama.

According to Carl Petrick, forest supervisor for the Conecuh, Talladega, Bankhead, and Tuskegee National Forests, Scott brings a wealth of leadership and scientific skills to the National Forests in Alabama.  For 15 years, Scott worked with the Forest Service providing extensive collaboration with community stakeholders, partners, and Forest Service employees.  He served as a research soil scientist for the Forest Service Southern Research Station in Pineville, LA, and Huntsville, AL.

 “I’m very excited to join the great group of employees, partners, and volunteers that work hard every day to manage the beautiful Bankhead Ranger District,” said Andy Scott. “Together we will provide a productive, safe and enjoyable work environment to accomplish the best outcomes for the land to benefit its natural resources and the public.”

Scott earned a Ph.D. in forestry and forest products from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.  He also holds a Bachelor of Science in forest management from Purdue University and a Master of Science in forestry from Texas A&M University.

A native of Shoals, IN, Scott is a member of the Society of American Foresters, Soil Science Society of America and the Alabama Forestry Council.   He is married to Debbie Scott and has three children.

The Empty Bowls Bicentennial Dinner will be this Thursday night, October 12 at the 5 p.m. at the Double Springs Municipal Building. Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for children. The proceeds go to the Winston County Arts Council and Main Street Ministries Food Bank. TThe Haleyville Lions Varsity Football team was defeated by Madison Academy Friday night 52-0. The Lions played a great game but was just no match for the private school which does appear to have advantages when it comes to players and facilities. Their field boasts a Jumbotron once used by Vanderbilt and wireless microphones for the referees to announce their calls. The loss was not a regional game and it may be possible for Haleyville to see another game against Madison Academy in postseason play. The Paradise 92.7 Lion of the Week is Nick Sadler.

Haleyville will play a regional game this Friday night against Good Hope, at Good Hope.
