PHIL CAMPBELL, ALA. — Northwest-Shoals Community College’s (NW-SCC) Alpha Zeta Iota Chapter (Phil Campbell Campus) of Phi Theta Kappa will host an Honors Forum, A Culture in Conflict: Freedom of Speech on the College Campus, Tuesday, November 7, 2017.

The public forum will be held at 11:30 a.m. at the Lou B. Bevill Center on the Phil Campbell Campus of NW-SCC.

Each year, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society focuses on a central honors study topic. This year’s topic is, How the World Works: Global Perspectives.

The 2017 forum will explore First Amendment rights and responsibilities on the college campus and community. The panel will also discuss the divisive issues which often lead to violent confrontations between those with opposing beliefs and ideologies.

The panelists for the forum are Kenneth Brackins, Psychology Instructor at NW-SCC; Dr. Timmy James, Associate Dean of Instructional Programs; Brad Pool, History Instructor; Michael McClung, English Instructor at NW-SCC; and Kym Robinson, Speech Instructor at NW-SCC.

According to Pam Peters, advisor for the Alpha Zeta Iota Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, forum topics are selected by the Phi Theta Kappa officers. “We are very excited about this forum,” said Peters. “Our officers have chosen this year’s topic with a hope that it will have a positive impact on our community.”

There is no charge for admission and the public is invited to attend.

A single vehicle crash at 4:50 a.m. Saturday, October 28, has claimed the life of a Haleyville man.  Timothy Wayne Smith, 54, was killed when the 2017 Jeep Wrangler he was driving left the roadway and struck a tree and caught fire. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash occurred on County Highway 34 near Cherry Circle, approximately one-half mile west of Haleyville.  Nothing further is available as Alabama State Troopers continue to investigate.

The Haleyville Lions football team was defeated Friday night by the Fayette Tigers 34-28. The Paradise 92.7 Lion of the Week is Ty Black. This Friday night the Lions travel to Central of Florence. Northwest-Shoals Community College (NW-SCC) President Humphrey Lee will retire December 31, 2017, after leading the College for the past 14 years.

President Lee shared his plans for retirement with the faculty and staff of the College Thursday morning (10/26) via email. “I love the NW-SCC family and the commitment each of you shows toward educating our students and improving the quality of life in our community,” stated Lee. “I have devoted almost 43 years of my life to working in education and I think it is time to enjoy the next phase of my life which includes spending more time with my family.” Continue reading

The Phillips High School She Bears Volleyball team is headed to the AHSAA North Super Regional as the Area 13 Winner with Monday night’s victory over runner-up Tharptown in 3 straight sets.  The She Bears season record now stands at 35 – 8, and they will play Sacred Heart Catholic of Anniston at 2:00 pm on Thursday at the Von Braun Center, South Hall.

Other area teams moving on to the Super Regional are 1A Addison and Meek, 2A Winston County, and 4A Haleyville.

A single-vehicle crash at 6:30 a.m. October 25, in Walker County, has claimed the life of a Russellville man.  Eugene Phillip Walker, 23, was killed when the 1994 Buick LeSabre he was operating left the roadway and struck a tree.  The crash occurred on Alabama Highway 5, five miles north of Jasper.  Walker was unrestrained.  Nothing further is available as Alabama State Troopers continue to investigate.

Once the Double Springs Post Office building and other businesses over the years the Traders and Farmers bank building in Double Springs came down in one day on Tuesday, October 24. But it will take a while to clean up. Once that’s done, construction will begin on the new bank building shown below.

The Haleyville Schools Board of Education met Tuesday and approved the expenditures for September in the amount of $1,546,933.78. The Board approved the purchase of a new school bus after approving the classification of one bus, #96-2 as obsolete, surplus or unserviceable. The Board approved one use of school facilities two field trips and eight fundraisers. Under personnel, the resignation of Dey Riddle as a Speech-Language pathologist was approved along with the request to move Jyl Loden to part-time status. Also approved hiring Guy Rains as Social Worker under a professional service agreement.

The principals of all three schools gave reports on their school activities and each recognized individual students for awards for outstanding achievement and leadership.

The next regular meeting of the BOE will be on Tuesday, November 28.

MONTGOMERY – The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is set to begin enforcing the Alabama Mandatory Liability Insurance Law (Act#2016-361). 

Last year, during the 2016 legislative session, the law was passed and signed by the Governor to mandate all Alabama motorists have liability insurance. Beginning Wednesday, Nov. 1, those who choose to drive without liability insurance will face a civil penalty.  Continue reading
