Haleyville City Council
The Haleyville City Council met Monday with Blue Russell absent. After approving the minutes of the last regular and work sessions, the Council approved the resignation of Connie Handley, secretary in the Police Department. The Council approved changing the date of the September 3rd Council meeting to September 4th due to the Labor Day holiday. Poll workers and a contract with the county commission for voting machines for the upcoming school Board Election on August 28.
Bids for street paving for the city were approved for a total of $199,500 to Mallory Burkhalter Paving, Inc., with the asphalt from the S.T. Bunn Asphalt Plant in Guin, through the Winston County Road Department.
A pay adjustment was approved for all city employees with an across the board pay raise of $.50/hour increase. Adjustments were also approved for the Police Department. Starting pay will be $12/hour for new hires/$13/hour for certified and topping out after 3 years at $15.50/hour. Sergeant pay will be $16.50 and Lieutenant/Investigator $18.50/hour.
A contract for opioid litigation was approved. This will cost the city nothing, but if funds become available because of legal action, the City could be reimbursed for expenses, incurred for handling cases involving opioids
The Council approved an application for a Homeland Security Grant for $39,000 with no match.
Susan Morgan was hired as the Human Resource Manager for the City.
The next Haleyville City Council meeting will be Monday, August 20th.

Fire Seriously Damages Home

A house on 20th Street, near 14th Avenue, was struck by lightning at 1:08 PM today during the passage of an isolated thunderstorm. With both parents at work, Chris Brewer was home at the time and called 9-1-1 to report smoke in his house. The Haleyville Fire Department responded quickly. however the fire, smoke, and water left the house with heavy damage.

WE NEED YOUR HELP! Doug Kennedy, from Haleyville, is a record-setting, gold medal, Paralympian wheelchair racer. No one is more deserving of recognition as an Alabama sports hero than Doug. Doug was nominated by his friend, Belinda Masdon Kimble, also from Haleyville, for the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in Birmingham, in 2015. He has been passed by for the past three years, and the ASHOF nominating committee meets again in July. The committee votes to put candidates on the ballot, and then a larger selection committee votes for the inductees from those on the ballot. WHAT CAN YOU DO? Please contact Scott Myers, ASHOF’s executive director, and let him know that Northwest Alabama wants to see Doug in the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame. Farmers Market in Haleyville

The Haleyville Farmers Market is open each Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday mornings till noon. The market is located next to Rocky Ravine Park on Highway 195 at 20th Avenue. The sign may be missing because it was damaged when hit by a wine delivery truck. See the previous story.

No Wine Before Its Time

Just before 6 a.m. Today, the driver of a box truck loaded with wine, headed to the Haleyville fell asleep and ran off the road hitting a culvert and coming to rest at the entrance to Rocky Ravine Park. The truck was had serious undercarriage damage but the driver had on a small cut on his arm. The driver stated he had been up with a baby most of the night, and with very little sleep had driven the two hours from Bessemer and almost made it to Walmart for his delivery. From the smell, apparently, some of the wine bottles were broken. The Haleyville Police and Fire Departments worked the scene until it was cleared in less than an hour by Lyle wrecker.

Robert Aderholt 25 July. WashingtonToday the House Appropriations Committee passed its 12th and final appropriations bill for Fiscal Year 2019, the Homeland Security funding bill. The bill includes $5 billion for new border wall construction and security. I am proud to help President Donald J. Trump keep his promise to build the Wall. -
All Three Inmates Recaptured!
All three escaped inmates from the Marion County Jail in Hamilton have been recaptured. The first to be recaptured was Leslie Dewayne Cameron. Cameron was apprehended by ALEA State Troopers at the Craft Community Center on Thorn Hill Road, just off Highway 129. The other two, Thomas Green and Christoper Spain were apprehended by Marion County Deputies on Hill Street in Hamilton.

All three of the inmates that escaped this morning from the Marion County Jail, have been recaptured and are all incarcerated in the Marion County Jail. Leslie Cameron was apprehended at intersection of State Hwy 129 and County Road 19 at 9:03 AM.Christopher Spain and Thomas Green were apprehended at a residence on Steele Street in Hamilton at 9:51 AM.All three inmates were back in custody of the Marion County Jail at 10:10 AM.I would like to extend my gratitude to all the law enforcement agencies that assisted my department in the search for these inmates. I commend the K-9s and their handlers from the Alabama Department of Corrections and appreciate their efforts in apprehending these inmates today. Also, I am very appreciative for all the phone calls and tips from the local citizens, that acted as additional eyes in today’s search. All three inmates received the following additional charges, when booked back into the Marion County Jail: Robbery 1st, Kidnapping 1st, Theft of Property 3rd, Assault 1st, Escape 1st, Theft of Property 4th, and Breaking and Entering a Vehicle Attached is the news release and video footage of the attack on the correctional officer.
