On Saturday, May 4, the Haleyville Band Booster Club hosted the annual Band Banquet at the Ninth Avenue Church of Christ, Fellowship Hall.  Booster Club President, Kevin Thompson, welcomed approximately 250 guests and introduced Representative Tracy Estes (Alabama House District 17) as the speaker for the evening.  After dinner, the group heard a speech about teamwork from Representative Estes.  Estes commented that it takes teamwork to earn what you have going on here at Haleyville.  Following Estes, Thompson recalled how many events the band had performed together and remarked about how they represented the “Home of Champions” every time they stepped onto a field or stage.  He urged band members to “make it yours” and to “leave your mark on this program” and take it to the next level.  Following Thompsons remarks, the program was turned over to Majorette Representative, Mrs. Amy Farris, and Color Guard Representative, Mrs. Kerry Brown spoke to the group about the Auxiliary.  Directors Mr. Reggie Tolbert and Mr. Judd Williams closed out the evening with remarks, handed out an array of awards, and hinted at 2019 on field production for marching season. Haleyville Middle School Director and Assistant Haleyville High School Assistant Director:  Mr. Judd Williams; Haleyville High School Band Director: Mr. Reggie Tolbert Continue reading

The Haleyville City Council met Monday with Councilmen Blue Russell and Royce Benefield absent. The Council approved the purchase of a Kubota Mower for the Street Department for $12,900.

A Resolution was approved which states the objections of the City of Haleyville to an Alabama Senate Bill 264 which would allow the installation of utility poles and wireless facilities within the city-owned right-of-way. Among the objections raised in the Resolution included the need for local governments to manage its own right-of-way and could result in a proliferation of aesthetically objectionable utility poles in Haleyville right-of-way.

The Council approved a Resolution authorizing Mayor Sunseri to enter into a contract with the Cassady Company for engineering services for the Wildlife Fencing at the Haleyville Airport in the amount of $36,085.00. Another Resolution was approved for the Federal Aviation Administration funding of approximately 4,070 linear feet of a 10′ fence to be added to the south, southwest and northwest side of the airport property.

A Resolution was approved for planned street paving for the City which includes 20th Street and 20th Avenue. Park of this paving will include the South Haleyville Church of Christ parking lot which is being done per a previous agreement with the Chuch to use the parking lot for the South Haleyville Scout Hut and storm shelter.

The Council accepted the low bid for glass doors for Park and Rec from North Alabama Glass for $2,675.00.

Mayor Sunseri announced the planned retirement of Haleyville Police Officer Jason Williams.

The next scheduled meeting of the Haleyville City Council will be on Monday, May 20, 5:30 p.m. at the Haleyville City Hall.

The HHS Lions baseball team lost both games Friday night against Brooks. Congratulations to the Lions for making it to the round 3 state playoffs. Football starts in August.

A two-vehicle crash at 11:24 a.m. Tuesday, May 1, has claimed the life of a Dora woman. Christy Lee Taylor, 43, was killed when the 2006 Nissan Titan she was driving collided with a 2002 Ford F-250 driven by Justin David Rivers, 30, of Addison. Taylor was pronounced dead at the scene, and Rivers was transported to Huntsville Hospital. A passenger in the Nissan was also transported to a local hospital. The crash occurred on Winston County 41, three miles north of Addison. Nothing further is available as Alabama State Troopers continue to investigate.
