Construction of the city's new storm shelter, also called the "Safe Room," began last week with excavation of the site at the lower parking lot on 21st Street. The 4-month project totals $600,000-plus. The city's share is $300,000. Robinson and Sons has four months, plus weather delays, to complete the project. Mayor Ken Sunseri is working on a grant(s) to re-locate the Emergency Operations Center to the new shelter. The city's current EOC is located inside Fire Station #1.
