Winston County Sheriff Rick Harris told the Haleyville Rotary Club on Thursday that his office is looking for help to puchase body armor for his deputies. Assaults on law enfrocement officers have more than quadrupled nationwide while deaths have been reduced. The reduction in on duty deaths is attributable to better training and proper equipment, including protective equipment such as body armor. Even with budget reductions, Harris has managed to increase personnel through changes in the way deupties are scheduled. He estimates it will take approximately $14,000 to outfit a 7-man team for drug interdiction. And, the Sheriff's Office will happily take donations to assist in funding the team.
