Council Honors Heroes

The City Council honored three heroes at its regular meeting Tuesday night. Police Sergeant Steve Hicks, Police Officer Nathan Whitman, and Fire/Rescue Captain Andy Frederick received "Awards of Excellence" for bravery. They rescued Joyce Markem Markem from her burning apartment January 15. [Deaf Woman Saved From Burning Apartment, HBTV.us, January 15]

Mayor Ken Sunseri praised the street, police, and fire departments, and the rescue squad for their response to Sunday night's snow storm. He said "We're proud of the city workers and the work they put forward."

City Council Meeting

Councilmember Bud Wilson said, "I realize a lot of our city streets are beat up right now." He added that as soon as some warm weather gets here, repairs will commence.

The Council also approved volunteers for the fire department. They are Jessie Keller, David Seals, and Jonathan Lindsey. This action makes them Paid On Call Firefighters.

In other action, the council passed three resolutions all dealing with RDS/Alatax to collect occupational fees, to process occupational discovery/recovery services, and to process business license discovery/recovery services.

General Operations Bills for January, in the amount of $429,607.50 were also approved.
