A public hearing was held Tuesday morning at the Neighborhood Facilities Building for the purpose soliciting public comments on a proposed grant for the new Haleyville Sports Complex. Mayor Ken Sunseri and Nathan Willingham with the Northwest Alabama Council of Local Governments (NACOG) explained the city is presently making a pre-application for a $150,000 grant from the National Park Service to be used for paving at the new facility. Mayor Sunseri explained the application for the grant is a long process with a lot of paperwork. The grant, if ultimately approved later this year, will be a 50/50 grant, meaning the city will be responsible for the same amount.

The grant is being administered through the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) and is highly competitive. The pre-application will determine whether the city should continue with it's request in March with an environmental study and more information.

Mayor Sunseri stated he hopes the park will be operational by August, but may not be totally complete, meaning a gravel parking lot to be paved soon afterwards. He said the economic impact for the city will be great, once completed.
