Two fires Tuesday night at 10:30 kept Haleyville and Bear Creek firemen busy well into the night. The Haleyville Fire Department responded to the first call, a house fire at 515 Old hamilton road, the home of Bill and Glenda Vickery. The Vickery's had fumigated their home for bugs, and were staying the night in a motel, thus no one was home at the time of the fire. The house was a total loss.
High winds, which preceded the passing cold front Tuesday night, was the indirect cause of a grass and woods fire near the west end of Forester Road, just off Highway 129. The wind blew a tree down across power lines, which sparked a fire. Oneal Jackson, who lived just across the road, fought the fire with a shovel and hoe until the firemen arrived.
