The Haleyville City Council met Monday with all members present and voted to approve the regular council minutes from their last meeting on June 1, and the general operation bills for $307,275.33. After a discussion from Calvin Cassady, the council voted to reject the bids for site prep on the sports complex. Cassady explained the lowest bids were above the amount budgeted for the project, enough to reject the bids on contract A & B.
The base bid on the site work was $1,879,952.03 for contract A. The engineering estimate was approximately $1.2 million. On contract B, the base bid was $415,000, with an engineering estimate around $325,000.
Contract C, Electrical, the bid was $428,200 and the estimate was around $350,000. Cassady said he had talked with the contractors to see if there was something they had missed, or if something could be cut.
The original cost estimate was made on 50 to 60,000 yards of dirt to be moved. When it was actually bid, it became 100,000 yards, a substantial difference according to Cassady. Using proposed savings from cutting back on the size of the parking lot, and several other items from the original plans, the costs can be reduced. The council voted to advertise for bids for grading to sub-grade at the sports complex and to advertise for bids to pave the street behind the Neighborhood Facilities Building.
The next scheduled regular council meeting is July 6, 5:30 p.m. at the Neighborhood Facilities Building.
