A group of 70 walkers began the 34 mile Price of Freedom Walk Saturday at 6 a.m. which ended at 7 p.m. Saturday night at the Halevyille High School to honor SRA Mark Forester, who was killed by enemy fire in Afghanistan on September 29, 2010.  The walk was to raise money for the Mark Forester Foundation scholarship fund for Haleyville High seniors.  The distance of 34 miles represents the age Mark would have been on May 15. At the HHS awards program on Tuesday, Conner Kiser and Lacey Rowe were awarded this year's Mark Forester college schlorships.

This from the the Mark Forester Foundation web site: The Mark Forester Foundation has been established to honor an American Hero, Mark Andrew Forester, and to provide a venue for the generosity of family, friends, and acquaintances of Mark that will benefit others. We are a tax-exempt, non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization.

It is the desire of Mark's family that his example be preserved and shared with the world. First and foremost, we do this by providing a college scholarship to at least one Haleyville High School student each year. The city of Haleyville and the school system have been very supportive to our family since Mark’s death and we want to give back to our home town. We also want students to understand that freedom does not come without a price. We take awarding this student(s) scholarship very seriously. A scholarship will be awarded to a deserving student(s) who exemplifies the same character traits and patriotism that were the basis of Mark's life. The foundation will allow these and other goals to be accomplished.
