MOULTON — Authorities responded to Bankhead National Forest after two hunters from Phil Campbell didn’t return to their camp on time, Lawrence County Sheriff Gene Mitchell said. According to family members of the missing hunters, they have been identified as Greg Sherrill and Buddy Brown.
Mitchell said deputies were called to the area near Gum Pond around 6:00 Sunday evening. He also said the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department was not planning a search Sunday night, but the Forestry Service had been contacted and might have begun a search.
Mitchell said the hunters had no known health issues and were outfitted with heavy clothing and rain gear.
“They should be in good shape,” he said. The forecast low for Sunday night is 37 degrees, but a mix of rain and sleet is expected early Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Huntsville.
