There was a three vehicle accident near the intersection of State Highway 13 and County Highway 99 in Bear Creek Thursday at 6:00 a.m. Bear Creek Police Chief Shane Whitten reported the Chevrolet Cavalier and the Dodge Ram were traveling north, and the Dodge Caravan was traveling south on State Highway 13. The Cavalier was attempting to make a left hand turn onto County Highway 99 and collided head on with the Caravan. Witnesses reported the Cavalier spun around on impact, and the Dodge Ram crashed into the driver’s side of the Cavalier. Both the Cavalier and the Caravan came to a stop in a grassy area off the side of the road, and the driver of the Dodge Ram was able to park his truck in the parking lot of KITH 5. The Bear Creek Fire Department responded to the scene and extricated the driver of the Cavalier from the vehicle. Both the Bear Creek and Haleyville Police Departments worked the accident.

After two air ambulance services declined to fly due to the weather, both Matthew Valley, the driver of the Cavalier from Michigan, was transported to Lakeland Community Hospital. Frederick Thomas McKinney III, driver of the Caravan from Spruce Pine, was transported to Russellville Hospital by ambulance with serious injuries. Chief Whitten did not have any updates on the conditions of the drivers and did not know if either had been transferred to another hospital for further treatment at the time of publication. Al Phillips, driver of the Dodge Ram, was not injured in the collision. The accident is under investigation by the Bear Creek Police Department.
