American Tower Corporation has begun construction on a new cell phone tower on Ellenburg Road. According to engineers with the company, AT&T is expected to provide service for the tower upon completion of the structure.

Currently, there is a delay in completing the building because crews can only build 180 feet up on the tower before power is provided. Alabama Power will soon be clearing several hundred feet of trees around the tower to run electricity to the structure. Once that phase of the project is completed, workers will resume with building the tower up. The engineer stated once the power project is completed, crews will set up a crane to work on the remaining portions of the tower. It should be completely finished in about 8 hours after the crane arrives.

After the structure is completed, West Tower Corporation from Jackson, Mississippi will take over the next phase. They will add a fence to secure the tower and the compound to house all of the technical equipment. AT&T will then add its equipment to the structure to set up cellular service for the area. AT&T is expected to take over and begin operating the tower no later than the end of 2015.
