The Winston County Sheriff's Department, in coordination with local police departments, is placing wooden crosses on the sides of several roads in Winston County. These crosses do not represent one particular accident where someone was killed but serve as a symbolic reminder to Winston County drivers that the area they are traveling in has been a hazardous stretch of roadway in the past. Shown in the photo to the left are (left to right)Sergeant Jon Tidwell with the Double Springs Police Department, Sergeant Rodney Shirley with the Haleyville Police Department, and Sergeant Bryan Kirkpatrick with the Winston County Sheriff's Department. As part of this effort, area law enforcement agencies remind you not to drive while distracted. Texting, driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, and other forms of distractions are often a factor in serious and fatal accidents. For the past ten years, Winston County has averaged eight deaths per year from car accidents. From those, 70% were not wearing seat belts. These crosses have been placed as a reminder to do the small things to make a difference in the big things while driving. |
