A Haleyville Police Officer attempted to stop a 1998 Ford Mustang for a minor traffic violation in the early hours of Sunday morning near Goar's Supermarket on State Highway 13. The vehicle stopped near the intersection of Byler Road and Alabama Avenue when the officer activated his lights; however, he fled the scene as the officer approached the car. The officer pursued the vehicle down Alabama Avenue, across State Highway 129, continued on Alabama Avenue to Sam Letson Industrial Road, and then south on State Highway 13. The pursuit continued until approximately the intersection of State Highway 13 and County Road 3, when the suspect made a left turn onto a private driveway. The male driver of the vehicle jumped from the vehicle and fled on foot from the scene into the woods. The female passenger, Jessica Lee Sowers, then took control of the vehicle, accelerated, and attempted to the leave the scene.  The rear of the vehicle caught the driver's door of the officer's car, causing the door to strike the officer's leg before the vehicle came to a stop in the grassy area in front of a home. The officer was checked and released from Lakeland Community Hospital, with only bruising. Sowers was arrested for Assault 1st Degree, Reckless Endangerment, and Possession of a Dangerous Drug. She was transported to and remains in the Winston County Jail, where she awaits trial. The Haleyville Police Department has not located the male driver at this time but is following leads on his whereabouts.
