The Haleyville City Council voted last night to consolidate all polling places in the city into two locations. The new locations will be the Neighborhood Facilities Building and the 21st Street Gym. A voter's new polling place will be based upon the voter's residential address and not on his old polling place.

The city has been divided in half by the line drawn by AL Hwy 195 in from East to AL Hwy 13 and out 13 to the Northwest. Residents North and East of the line will vote at the 21st Street Gym and those South and West of the line will vote at the Neighborhood Facilities Building.

The change takes place for the march primary. Voters will be receiving post cards in the mail from the registrar of voters telling them where to vote.

The Council also voted 4-2 to reject a plan to retain two employees whose grant funding has expired. These employees were specializing in grant requests, grant compliance, and financial controls. They were hired in the wake of the april tornados and were funded through grants administered by ADECA.

County commission Chair Roger Hayes spoke to the Council. He told the Council of his intention to seek re-election and thanked the Council for the level of County-City cooperation and asked for their support.

In other action, the Council approved the alcohol license for Dollar General on AL Hwy 195, approved the hiring of Jeff Postel as a full-time firefighter with additional duties in the fire marshal and enforcement area, and approved general operation expenditures for December in the amount of $386,716,42.

Finally, the Council approved a street light across from the Posey residence at 1700 28th St.

The Council meets again Monday, February 6, 2012, 7 PM, at City Hall.
