Saturday May 14, 2011 marked the first annual Price of Freedom 10k and 5k Race, and the Price of Freedom Memorial Birthday 30-Mile Walk which took place here in Haleyville.  Both the Race and Walk were to honor Mark Forester who was killed in action on 29 September 2010.  The events were also to raise money for the Mark Forester Foundation.  People came from several states to take part.

Saturday morning started off with the departure of 35 energetic walkers at 6 am, who were embarking on a 30 mile walk in honor of Mark’s 30th birthday.  Joining the walk were friends, family, and military teammates of Mark’s.  There were 5 rest stops along the way, with the first stop being Mark’s grave site where memorial push-ups were completed by all in memory of him.  Another stop was at the Forester residence, where cupcakes were served and “happy birthday” was sung to Mark. The energy and spirit of the memorial walk was seen in the participant’s faces as they crossed the finish line at Haleyville High School ahead of schedule, in 10 hrs 40 mins.  The Price of Freedom Memorial 30-Mile Walk will be an annual event in Haleyville.

The Price of Freedom Race also took place Saturday morning.  The events kicked off with the presentation of the flag and the National Anthem at 8:30 am.  There were three races, a 10k, 5k and a 1 mile fun run.  The races where a success, having over 250 registering, and many more who came out to support the event.  There were inflatable toys, crafts, face painting, a concession stand, products being sold of Mark, and door prizes.  The Price of Freedom Race was a tremendous success and we look forward to the event growing with each passing year.

A big thanks to all those who volunteered their time and resources for both events.  Thank you to the Haleyville Police Dept., City of Haleyville, and Haleyville High School. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

More information about the events for this year and for 2012 is available at www.markaforester.com.  Pictures will be posted soon.
