As evening fell Sunday, two hunters were reported missing near the Gum Pond area of the Bankhead Forest in Lawrence County. Gregory Sherrill and Buddy Brown, both of the Phil Campbell area, had been hog hunting since Sunday morning. Near dusk, the men called their family members and reported they were lost and unable to find their way out. The family members then contacted the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department to begin the search.

Members from the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department, the Forestry Service, and various other agencies from the area worked through the night to locate Sherrill and Brown. Search crews were able to identify a general area where they were because the hunters shot their guns into the air in response of hearing sirens in the area. However, they were not able to get to them due to the weather and the rough terrain of the area until after daylight Monday. Law enforcement requested the State Trooper helicopter to assist with the search Monday, but it was unable to fly because of the weather. Search crews spread throughout the area on foot and by horseback until the men were rescued just before noon Monday.

Both Sherrill and Brown were ambulatory and were transported to the hospital for medical evaluation.
