Brilliant Elementary School will host Kindergarten Preregistration for the 2017-18 school year on Friday, April 7, from 9:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.

Students must have the following to register: Birth Certificate, Original Alabama Blue Slip, Social Security Card, Proof of Residency, Copy of custody or guardianship papers if applicable.

The registering student must be 5 years old on or before September 2 to register.

Governor Bentley has declared Alabama to be under a state of emergency for Wednesday, April 5. Haleyville and all Winston County and Marion County schools and Small Miracles Daycare are canceled for Wednesday, April 5 due to the forecast weather. Other closures include Fontaine Trailer in Haleyville. Paradise 92.7 will announce other cancellations as we receive them. If you do not see a company or business, then I have not received any word on closing.

The Haleyville City Council met Monday night, April 3 with all members present. A short meeting with only one item on the agenda. The council approved a resolution recognizing April as Fair Housing Month. The City of Haleyville continues to further fair housing for citizens, without regard to race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status, or disability. The council also discussed the need for concession workers at the new Sports Complex but no action was taken. The next Haleyville City Council meeting will be Monday, April 17.

A single-vehicle crash at 8:05 a.m. Sunday, April 2, has claimed the life of a Nauvoo woman.  Trisha Nicole Sims, 21, was killed when the 2002 Honda Accord she was driving left the roadway and overturned off a bridge one mile south of Nauvoo on Sandcut Road. She died on her son, Ryder German’s birthday. Her daughter, Brooklin German will be 1 on April 13. Services for Trisha will be at Collins FH in Jasper Thursday, April 6 at noon.

Two fires Saturday afternoon, April 1, at almost the same time keep Haleyville firemen busy. The first fire was a bulldozer which caught fire while clearing land just north of the runway at the Haleyville airport. The second fire was a shed located behind a house on 16th Avenue. The bulldozer was heavily damaged and the shed and contents destroyed.

A two-vehicle crash at 5:25 p.m. Friday, March 31, has claimed the life of a Sheffield man.  Mark Edward Horton, 45, was killed when the 1986 Mazda B2000 he was driving collided with a 2005 Dodge Caravan driven by Hallie Carlita Cravens, 29, of Florence. Horton, who was not using a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene. Cravens and the vehicle’s passenger Michael Adam Wallis, 27, of Madison were both transported to ECM Hospital in Florence. The crash occurred on Alabama 20 at the 13-mile marker, eight miles north of Florence.  Nothing further is available as Alabama State Troopers continue to investigate.

A single-vehicle crash at 9 p.m. Friday, March 31, has claimed the life of a Bremen man.  Johnny Lynn Jones, 56, was seriously injured when the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado he was driving left the roadway and overturned. Jones, who was not using a seatbelt, was transported to Walker Baptist Medical Center in Jasper where he was pronounced dead at 10:07 p.m. The vehicle’s passenger, Keith Ross Odom, 27, of Pinson was transported to UAB Hospital in Birmingham.  The crash occurred on Alabama 69 near the 212-mile marker, three miles north of Boldo.  Nothing further is available as Alabama State Troopers continue to investigate.

Mayor Ken Sunseri threw out the first pitch on field 3 at the new Haleyville Sports Complex Saturday morning, April 1. A large crowd attended the opening ceremonies of the new facility which featured the introduction of the city council and Dixie Youth volunteers. The multi-million dollar complex still has a few minor items to complete but is already in full use. If you have not seen it in person, drive up 9th Avenue and see the newest addition to the assets of the City of Haleyville.

The public is invited to the opening ceremony for the new multi-million dollar Haleyville Sports Complex Saturday morning, April 1, at 10 a.m. Following the ceremony, the kids will take to the field for the first game at 11 a.m. Mayor Sunseri will throw out the first ball. The parking lot is paved, but not yet stripped. Other than a few other minor items to be completed, the complex will be in full use for the remainder of the summer.

A two-vehicle crash Tuesday, March 28, has claimed two lives.  Billy Ray Massey, 72, and Carolyn Walker Massey, 69, of Double Springs were killed when the 2006 Buick Lacrosse they were in collided with a 1996 Freightliner driven by James Gregory Garrett, 42, of Monroeville.  Billy Massey, the Buick’s driver, and Carolyn Massey, the passenger, were both pronounced dead at the scene.  Garrett was transported to DCH Hospital in Tuscaloosa.  The crash occurred at 11:48 a.m. on Alabama 13 near the 229-mile marker, three miles north of Berry.  Nothing further is available as Alabama State Troopers continue to investigate.

Just after 1 a.m. Thursday morning, March 30, law enforcement officers working into the night located and arrested Corey Dean, 22, in Carbon Hill. He was charged with second-degree escape and first-degree theft of property and returned to the Marion County jail from which he and another inmate had escaped on March 17.
