A single-vehicle crash at 6:50 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, has claimed the life of a Nauvoo man. Joshua Shane Garrison, 39, was seriously injured when the 2008 Dodge Ram he was driving left the roadway and struck a tree. Garrison was transported to UAB Hospital in Birmingham where he died today, Feb. 23. The crash occurred on Alabama 195 near the 7-mile marker, five miles north of Jasper. This weekend February 23-25 is Alabama’s severe weather preparedness sales tax holiday. This means you can buy common items that cost less than $60 tax–free. These are things like batteries, cell phone chargers, and self-powered light sources. The Haleyville City Council met Tuesday and approved advertising for two new police cars and quotes for the installation of a washer and dryer at the Haleyville Fire Station for turnout gear. Other items added to the agenda included a request for quotes for a new roof at the Neighborhood Facilities Building, the acceptance of the resignation of police officer Derek Henderson, who will be going to the Russellville Police Department, and a discussion on the grant for the road to Masonite.

Following a trip to Washington D.C. last week, Mayor Sunseri stated he did not think to donate the 9-1-1 phone to the Smithsonian was a good idea because of the restrictions the Smithsonian would impose. The phone would forever become the property of the Smithsonian and would be difficult to borrow back. However, while there, Sunseri learned of the new National Law Enforcement Museum presently under construction which will display the phone and loan it back to the City of Haleyville when requested. Mayor Sunseri announced the hiring of the following people for the summer season of the Park and Rec and the Sports complex at $9.50/hr. For the Sports Complex Concession rehire Ann Kiser, Kara Thrasher, Kim Thrasher, Misty McNutt, and Clair Newell. New Hires are Caleb Williams, Tyler Dodd, Sydney Kiser, Zoe Lawler, Hayden Ward, Chase Jordan and Hannah Jones. For the Park and Rec seasonal grass cutting and maintenance Aubrey McCuller and moving Jordan Egres from part-time to seasonal.

The next meeting of the Haleyville City Council will be Monday, March 5.

The Phillips High Girls Basketball Team defeated Holy Spirit at Hanceville 67-48. Phillips was down 10 points in the second quarter but overcame the deficit to pull off a huge win. Next stop, Birmingham to play in the state tournament. The Phillips “She Bears” will play Linden Monday, February 21. The last time the girls won the 1A state championship was in 1986.

Monday, the Phil Campbell Lady Bobcats defeated Cold Springs 46-29 to in the regional playoffs in Hartselle to earn a trip to Birmingham on Monday also. The Bobcats (27-5) will play Samson (29-3) at 3 p.m. Monday at Legacy Arena in Birmingham.

The Phillips High School ‘She Bears’ defeated last year’s State Champions R.A. Hubbard ‘Lady Chiefs’ by a score of 53 – 49 in the Regional Semifinals at Wallace State Hanceville on Friday, February 16.

The girls advance to the 1-A Regional Finals on Tuesday, February 20 at 4:00 PM between Phillips and Holy Spirit (Tuscaloosa).  The She Bears record climbs to 27 – 3 as they advance to the Elite Eight.

Phil Campbell defeated Mars Hill 55-46 Thursday the Class 2A girls Northwest regional game at Wallace State. The Lady Bobcats will play Cold Springs Monday at 3 p.m. with a chance to advance to the State finals in Birmingham.

The Haleyville High School Lions varsity boys basketball team was defeated today in a very close game by Cordova 49-45 in the Regional semi-finals of the state regional playoffs at Wallace State. That game ended the overall successful basketball season for the Lions. Now it is time for softball and baseball.

Monday, February 19 is Washington’s birthday or President’s Day. Schools, banks, and government offices will be closed. The Haleyville City Council meeting which would normally be held Monday has been rescheduled for Tuesday at 5:30 at the Haleyville City Hall.

Haleyville Street & Sanitation will be closed Monday also. Monday’s route will be picked up on Tuesday, along with Tuesday’s route.

The HHS Lions Varsity Basketball team defeated Danville Tuesday night 54-27 to advance to the Regional semi-finals at Wallace State on Saturday morning. Game time against Cordova is 10:30 a.m. and can be heard on Paradise 92.7.
