As storms moved through Northwest Alabama late Wednesday and early Thursday morning. Several trees were reported down in the Haleyville, Ashridge, and Lynn areas. Members of the Lynn Fire and Rescue were out most of the night removing trees which had fallen and blocked Highway 5 and County Road 25. No buildings were reported damaged and no one was injured from the high winds and storms.

Work began Wednesday, June 19 on 20th Street on a repaving project from CVS to the HHS football field and 20th Avenue. The stripping and paving should be complete by Friday, June 21. If you travel in the area, look for the men with the signs to guide you through.

The Haleyville City Council met Monday, June 17 with a minimum quorum of four including Mayor Sunseri with Jonathan Bennett and Drew Thrasher absent.  The Council approved the operation bills and purchase orders for May in the amount of $429,574.84. The low bid was approved from Columbus Fencing for fencing at the Haleyville Airport and an airport improvement funding application was also approved. A five-year contract extension was approved for the red 9-1-1 phone currently on display at the National Law Enforcement Museum in Washington, D.C.

The Council approved following the lead of the state and declaring Friday, July 5, a City Holiday for this year only.

Mayor Sunseri discussed the problem of trashy property throughout the city. He stated he had a list of 45 houses and properties which needed to be cleaned up but getting the property owners to do so was a major problem. The City cannot legally do the work but can assist with cleanup from curbs once the property has been torn down or placed in an accessible location. Another problem is one of the brush trucks is presently out of service for repairs.

The next scheduled City Council meeting will be Monday, July 1, 5:30 p.m. at the Haleyville City Hall.

Davy Alan Reed with HCS Superintendent of Education, Dr. Holly Sutherland

The Haleyville City Board of Education recently hired Davy Alan Reed who has been the Assistant Principal at the McAdorrt Middle School for the past two years. Reed graduated from Hackleburg High in 1985. He has an AS degree from Northwest Alabama Junior College, BS from the University of Alabama, MS from the University of Alabama, Birmingham, MA from UAB. He attended USM Educational Leadership Ph.D., Praxis Educational Leadership and presently seeking an EDS from UAB.

The next meeting of the HCS Board of Education and the first with the newly elected President of the Board, Donna Jones, will be Tuesday, June 25, 7 p.m. in the Board room at HHS.

One lady has been there from the beginning. Meet Dianne Caldwell, head of housekeeping services at Lakeland Community Hospital.

Lakeland Community Hospital, which started as a County owned hospital when it opened 50 years ago as Burdick-West Hospital. Through a change of ownership three times over the years, it is now back as a City/County Hospital.

Workers for Tombigbee Electric Co-op have been in Haleyville in the past two weeks installing fiber optic cables for Freedom Fiber, a subsidiary of Tombigbee Electric. According to Steve Foshee, who heads the Tombigbee Co-Op, at a recent meeting of the Haleyville Rotary Club, work started in May with the installation fiber optics for the new high-speed internet service. Even though Tombigbee does not provide power to the Haleyville area, it has a working agreement with Alabama Power to use their poles to run the fiber cable. Mr. Foshee stated that the definition of high-speed internet service is at least 100mbs, both down and up and that is what will be available from Freedom Fiber.
