Thursday night, February 7, the Haleyville Lady Lions Varsity Basketball team defeated Curry 39-31. After the girls’ game, the Lions Varsity Boys defeated Curry 49-42. Both teams capturing the Area Championship. Both teams will now compete at home in the state sub-regionals starting Monday as the Lady Lions will take on Danville Monday night and the Varsity Boys will play St. John Paul II on Tuesday. Both games will be at 7 p.m. at the HHS gym.

The Haleyville City Council met Tuesday with all members present. The Council approved a resolution supporting the protection of local control over public streets and public assets. This was in response to recent actions by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in 2018 which took unprecedented, sweeping action to prevent local governments from effectively managing public assets and to severely compromise their ability to to manage the public streets effectively and equitably and requires local taxpayers to subsidize the use of public streets and other public assets by the wireless industry. This resolution supports a U.S. House Bill to overturn the FCC’s actions.

Following a public hearing just before the regular Council meeting, A tax abatement was approved for the new Cazadores Mexican Restaurant, which is under construction on Highway 195. The Council also approved amending the City’s sales tax ordinance to correct any language and clerical errors in the original ordinance.

The Council approved advertising for one full-time and 2 seasonal Park and Recreation employees plus lifeguards for this summer.

The next meeting of the Haleyville City Council was moved from Monday, February 18 to Tuesday, February 19 due to the President’s Day Holiday on the 18th.

Miss Bethany Knight is a graduate of Hamilton High School and a freshman at the University of Alabama obtaining a bachelor’s degree in Music in Vocal Performance and Theory.  She is a recipient of the Presidential Scholarship from UA and the Valedictorian of her senior class in 2018.  Her accomplishments include Guest Princess on the Broadway Princess Party tour; 2016, 2017, and 2018 Best Actress Award with Self Express Productions; Miss Hamilton High School; and Class of 2018’s Most Likely to Succeed- Girl. Miss Knight enjoys drawing pictures of Broadway actors as their respective characters which resulted in backstage access at the National Tour of the Phantom of the Opera along with numerous acknowledgments through social media from Broadway performers. Miss Knight states, “Miss America is the ideal representation of what young women should be and I want to hold myself to that standard. I chose this organization so my platform could have a strong foundation and my talent and love of performing could be shared.” 

As Miss 9-1-1, Bethany will next compete in the Miss Alabama Competition. If chosen Miss Alabama, she will then compete in the Miss America Competition. The Haleyville Rotary Club wish her the best.

The Haleyville Rotary Club thanks all the businesses and individuals who made a contribution to the 2019 Miss 9-1-1 Competition thus ensuring the success of this year’s Competition.

The scheduled last game of the season for Haleyville Lady Lions and Varsity Boys scheduled for tonight has been canceled and will not be rescheduled. Tonight was to have been Senior Night. Senior recognition is now scheduled for Friday afternoon during the basketball pep rally at 2:30 all senior players, cheerleaders, and their parents will be recognized.

Games in Russellville will be played as scheduled. Both the boys and girls HHS teams advance to the area tournament at Curry High School on Tuesday, February 5. The HHS Boys will play Fayette County at 4:45 and the HHS Girls vs Fayette County at 6 pm.

Even though the weather prediction may have missed it for this area for Tuesday, all schools, businesses, and plants will be open as usual on Wednesday.
