  • Free Tax Preparation for 2016

    Free volunteer tax preparation services will be available from the Winston County AARP Tax-Aide sites with locations in Double Springs and Haleyville, AL.  Volunteers will prepare and electronically file federal and state tax returns for taxpayers with low and middle incomes.  You do not have to be a member of AARP, a retiree, or a certain age to use this service.

     These tax sites were developed thru collaboration between the IRS, AARP Tax-Aide, Mayor Robinson of Double Springs and Mayor Sunseri of Haleyville, AL. 

     Individuals should bring:

    •       Photo proof of identification 
    •       Social Security cards for themselves, their spouse, and dependents or Social Security number verification letters issued       by the Social Security Administration 
    •       Birth dates for all persons listed on the tax return 
    •       Wage and earning statement(s) Forms W-2, W-2G, and 1099-R, from all employers and Social Security 
    •       Interest and dividend statements from banks (Forms 1099) 
    •      Copies of last year’s federal and state returns, if available 
    •      Bank routing and account numbers for direct deposit of refunds 
    •      Other relevant information about income and expenses 
    •      Amounts paid for day care, if applicable, and the day care provider’s identifying number.

    Haleyville (Old 14th Avenue Elementary School – Chamber of Commerce conference room), at 2324 14th Avenue Suite B, tax preparation will be on Tuesday, February 9, March 8, and April 5 from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00p.m.

    Double Springs (Town Hall courtroom) at 21 Main Street, tax preparation will beon Wednesday, February 10, March 9, and April 6 from 9:00 a. m. – 3:00 p.m.

    Haleyville City Council Meeting

    The Haleyville City Council met Tuesday evening with all members present. The council approved the minutes from the last council meeting on January 4 and the December general operation bills in the amount of $475,774.35.

    The council voted to approve a change in the alcoholic beverage ordinance changing the amount of the license fee to $2,500 from the original $5,000.

    An application was approved for a $150,000 grant from the Land and Water Conservation Fund for the new Haleyville Sports Complex.

    The council also voted to advertise for a full-time fireman to replace Tommy Lewis who will be retiring in April.

    A group of 20 individuals were at the council meeting to express their concurs on the use of the land next to the Knight Subdivision. A request was on the agenda for the last city council meeting to bring it into the city limits, but was tabled without further action.  Members of the group stated they did not want any low income, or multi-family housing built on the property. So far, there has been no public proposal to develop the property in that manner.

    The next meeting of the Haleyville City Council will be Monday, February 1, 5:30 p.m. at the Neighborhood Facilities Building.

    More Charges Against Bear Creek Police Officer

    A Franklin County grand jury has issued more charges, including additional sexual abuse and rape charges, against a former Franklin County sheriff’s deputy.

    Court officials said Carl Nathan Weeks Jr., 33, of Phil Campbell, was indicted on six counts of second-degree sexual abuse, three counts of first-degree sexual abuse and one count of first-degree rape. Weeks, a former deputy with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, was arrested in December after an investigation by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation. At the time of his arrest, he was charged with only three counts of sexual abuse of a child. The case was presented to the recently concluded January grand jury, and the new charges were issued. Sheriff Shannon Oliver said Weeks, along with his attorney, Tim Case, of Florence, came to the jail Friday and surrendered to authorities. He has been released on bail of $150,000.

  • Missing Man Found Dead in Wooded Area

    Gregory Steven Bates, 50, who was living on 14th Avenue, had been missing for 10 days. His body was found Saturday afternoon and recovered from a wooded ravine approximately 350 yards from his residence. His body has been sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Science in Huntsville to determine the cause of death. According to Winston County Coroner, Larry Gilliland, the preliminary results should be available by mid-week.

    Haleyville 9-1-1 Weekend Set For June 3-4

    Each year, the Haleyville Area Chamber of Commerce and the City of Haleyville, AL hosts a festival to celebrate its heritage and honor first responders. This year the 9-1-1 Festival has received the great honor of being named one of the Southeast Tourism Society’s Top 20 Events in the Southeast United States for June 2016. The annual Festival set for June 3-4 celebrates the ‘Home of 9-1-1’ where the first emergency call originated with a family-friendly event including music, children’s activities, street vendors, a parade, classic car show, and much more, while honoring its police, fire, rescue, and emergency personnel.

    The Festival Committee is proud to announce that headliner LONESTAR will take the 9-1-1 music stage this year with their country roots and strong melodies. Since their national launch in 1995, Lonestar has sold in excess of ten million album units and achieved ten #1 country hits including “No News”, “Come Crying To Me”, and their crossover smash “Amazed”, which was also #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and the first single in years to top both charts. In 1999 the band was awarded ACM Single of the Year for “Amazed”, which also won Song of the Year. In 2001 Lonestar received the Vocal Group of the Year award from the Country Music Association.

    In 1999 their third album, Lonely Grill, was certified multi-platinum in both the United States and Canada. It also yielded three more #1 country hits…”Smile”, “Tell Her”, and “What About Now”. The 2001 release “I’m Already There” topped the country album charts, as did the band’s 2003 From There To Here: The Greatest Hits, which produced another #1 single, “My Front Porch Looking In”.

    The 9-1-1 festivities get underway at noon on Friday, June 3 when Haleyville’s Main Street area closes to allow the many arts/crafts and food vendors to set up. At 5:00 p.m. the Kids’ Zone opens with inflatable fun for those 12 years and younger. The music stage will come alive at 5:00 p.m. with favorites “Tremayne featuring Shelbie Z”, followed by our own “Winston Ramble”, the “Sweet Tea Trio”, and headliner LONESTAR at 9:00 p.m.

    First thing Saturday morning is the third annual 5K Color Fun Run at 7 a.m. sponsored by Encore Rehabilitation and SportsFit. A classic car show to benefit the Haleyville High School Automotive Technology program and an antique tractor show will both open at 8 a.m. A variety of activities will include something for everyone with the Kids’ Zone and the arts/crafts and food vendors opening at 9 a.m. Judging and awards for the car show will take place in the afternoon. Also on Saturday, the local group “Kreek” will entertain with live music and host an open mic for other area artists to showcase their talents.

    In 1968, the very first 9-1-1 emergency call was placed from City Hall by Alabama Speaker of the House Rankin Fite to U.S. Representative Tom Bevill at the City’s police station. The annual 9-1-1 Festival celebrates this history-making moment with an entirely free event made possible by Haleyville business, industry and individual sponsors.
