A fire at the home of Justin Wilson at 2814 17th Avenue just after 6 p.m. Sunday night caused fire and smoke damage, but the house was saved by the quick work of Haleyville firemen. No one was home at the time of the fire. Reportedly, Wilson had cooked out on his back deck earlier in the day he and his family had left. The fire appeared to have started on the deck area and burned around his patio doors and filled the house with smoke.

A two-vehicle crash at 3:45 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9, has claimed two lives. Kathryn Mcnutt, 54, of Haleyville was killed when the 1995 Infiniti J30 she was driving collided head-on with a 1987 GMC S10 driven by James Harold Hood, 76, of Haleyville. Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene. The crash occurred on Alabama 243 near the one-mile marker. Nothing further is available as Alabama State Troopers continue to investigate.

A single-vehicle crash at 12:30 p.m. today, Dec. 6, has claimed the life of a Haleyville woman. Barbara Godsey Borden, 68, was killed when the 2007 Kia Amanti she was driving left the roadway and struck a culvert. Borden, who was not wearing a seat belt, was transported to Decatur General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The crash occurred on Alabama 195 two miles south of Haleyville. Nothing further is available as Alabama State Troopers continue to investigate.

The Haleyville City Council met Monday night will George Russell absent. The Council approved a resolution authorizing Mayor Ken Sunseri to purchase equipment for the concession building at the new sports complex. The equipment will include freezers, ice and drink machines, refrigerators, stainless steel work tables, shelving and other miscellaneous items not to exceed $35,000.00.

The Council approved the renewal of a $975,000 line of credit. Also approved was a change order for Cripple Creek Neighborhood Improvements project. The change was to install a 2-inch PVC water main along 17th Avenue in lieu of a 6-inch PVC water main and a fire hydrant resulting in a net decrease of $9,6000

Mayor Sunseri stated the downtown weather warning siren next to the Water Department was still inoperative awaiting parts. The next scheduled meeting of the Haleyville City Council will be Monday, December 19, 5:30 p.m. at City Hall.

Effective immediately, Governor Robert Bentley and Interim State Forester Gary Cole have rescinded the statewide Drought Emergency ‘No Burn’ Order which has been in effect since early November. Officials with the Alabama Forestry Commission (AFC) say the state has received enough rainfall over the last few days to reduce the threat of dangerous wildfires.

Haleyville High School will be hosting a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Assistance) Day on Tuesday, December 6 from 8:00 am until the end of the day.  Representatives from BSCC and NWSCC will be present to help all parents and students with the FAFSA.  Please bring all of your 2015 Tax Returns to get help filling out the FAFSA. Another round of thunderstorms headed to Alabama tonight. The good news is the much-needed rain continues. The bad news, there is a possibility some of the storms could be severe, but the good news is, most of the worst weather should be south of this area. The next front on Wednesday night and Thursday will bring seriously cold temps, 36 Wednesday night, a high of only 43 Thursday and down to 20 Thursday night.

Thanks to the many people who have called, texted or emailed with some great remarks about the Paradise 92.7 weather coverage last Tuesday night. Most told of their TV being out, their weather radios inoperative and Paradise 92.7 was on the air live to keep everyone informed about the tornados which struck Winston and Marion counties. No one was killed and no serious injuries. Just a reminder, if you do not have a battery-operated radio, may I suggest you get one today. It’s not if you need one, but when.

Last week the Safe Room downtown was filled with over 400 people waiting out both waves of the storm. The other shelters throughout the city were also well utilized. Keep your eye on the weather, and remember when there is a tornado watch for this area, the Safe Room and shelters will be open.
